Default Should I do pro-medical cannabis 'pro bono' work at my law firm?
That's pretty much the question: Should I do pro-medical cannabis 'pro bono' work at whatever law firm I end up working at? A lot of firms typically like you to do some volunteer "pro bono" type legal work, and they credit you billable hours to do it.

Whenever I get out of school and land my first firm job... would it just be incredibly stupid to do medical MJ legal type charity work? I'm looking to work in Northern California, where I would expect to find a few "friendlies", but still... Maybe I should wait 5-10 years until I make partner to come out with that shit, eh? If at all?

Maybe I should do it, but don't ask for credit and just try to keep it to myself? I dunno... word would get out eventually anyway... but maybe that would be a more politically correct way of doing it...

What do you think? I'm high.

I serious doubt they will let you. Most law firms want a squeaky clean image and choose pro bono work in a field of law the firm specializes in. If you were on your own then go for it. Not a whole lot of good paying law firms specializing in marijuana. Stoners don't have no money man.....

Probably good advice. However, Steptoe and Johnson and several other very big law firms have done pro-bono work related to MMJ. Somebody represents these patients in these million dollar suits, you know? And NORML and the like do not have that much money to be honest. I think a lot more firms then I know are actually involved. I think we'd be surprised.

Sounds like your having a life decision quandry.Of COURSE you do pro bono work for MMJ patients. Plus if you try and fix your mind quik you won't ever subject yourself to working for a defacto extention of state and federal courts via the bar. Good travels to you!

Thanks.

As far as the bar though... I don't get it. Couldn't you just as easily say getting a license to practice medicine is the same thing, since the judiciary ultimately has oversight over those 'boards' too? Hell, even just working at all could be characterized as working for a "defacto extension of courts" since your taxes would be paying the salaries of all those government officials including the judiciary ones.

peace,

that shit goes on your resume. Those doctors dispensing weed are on the fringe of the medical community. The fringe is never profitable. Make your money then do that shit.
