This seasons cannabis culture has a great article on china. Saying that in the rural areas the only way you couldn't find it is if you were deaf, blind, and had no sense of smell.
It basically grows everywhere and they pick it on the trails as they backpack. Cultivation of hemp is huge so people grow cannabis everywhere. I'd look into it...but im not real big on backpacking...especially in china.
