I used to work in the outback in a pair of thongs. It was really hot, dry country, so what would happen is your feet would build up callouses especially in the folds of your toes and around the back of your heels. Eventually they'd start to crack and would split right down to the tender flesh.
Then the dust would fill the cracks, dry them a little more and they'd split some more. I ended up with the hardest, toughest feet. Covered in callouses and scars. The same would happen to the insides of our fingers from handling steel bars all day. Nowadays I have baby feet, but I'm working on them again. I got too used to industrial safety boots and hiking boots. Gotta toughen up methinks.
