Default 420, what does it mean?

I've always wanted to know what 420 actually means.
I used to think it was a police code.
I googled it, and found that people think it's do with the number of chemicals found in cannabis.
Some say it's to do with the national cannabis holiday April 20th (also Hitlers birthday).
Does any of you Oldskoolers really know?

4:20 time to smoke!

I believe there is no 420 police code?
I believe there is only 370 odd chemicals in cannabis?
April 20th, I believe was selected after 420 became popular?

As far as I understand it, it started with a bunch of school kids some 40-50 years ago, 4:20 was the time they were to meet to burn it up. 420 then became code for exactly that, smoking it up.

Well thats my take on the 420 thingo

to me its always been April 20th in like my national pot smoking holiday me and my buddys eack get a oz. and try and smoke all of it and its also tradition to buy and brake in a new peace thats my 420
