Default I've accepted a job in San Francisco!
I'm so excited! It's for an internship for this summer only, as I still have one year of law school left. Given the state of the economy, hopefully it will turn into a permanent offer once I graduate two summers from now.

As I was interviewing around the country, San Fran stuck out at me for sure. I knew I'd enjoy a summer there. The west coast weed was killer compared to what I get on the east coast. But at the same time I sort of didn't want to have to go across the country away from all my family and friends on the East Coast.

I've been praying for God to lead me to San Fran if that is His will, and it turns out after about 100+ resumes sent out around my state and the country (and ~10 interviews) San Fran was my only offer. So... there ya go! I'll take that as a sign I suppose.

I do have a couple questions if anyone is familiar with San Fran.

- what are good/bad areas of the town to live in? (as far as crime, general friendliness, whatever). I'll be working pretty much in the heart of the "financial district" downtown.
- what are some good places to look as far as finding a roomate to sub-lease with for the summer (craigslist? other city specific sites, particular newspapers if I can get a copy, etc.)
- do I have to be a CA citizen to get a medical cannabis card? (If you have a doctor you would recommend to see, that would be great too). I'll be bringing medical records and documentation of my chronic pain to show whatever doctor I go to for a recommendation.

Thanks!

Spent a week in San Fran this past spring. It was the best week of my life. If I thought I could afford it, I would move there in a second.

This summer is already over... do you mean next summer?

Also... SF is a lot of fun.... great city.... but HELLA expensive to live. Luckily they have a good transit system so you can live outside the city and take BART in.

Yes, I mean this coming summer... summer of 2009. Summer internships with law firms get settled well in advance of the summer, apparently. I wouldn't mind saving some money on rent. At the same time, I'd really like to experience the city for all its worth, and that would seem to be easier living in the city itself. Plus I can't stand long commutes.

I found a little place that rents a little room with a bed and a dresser, and a shared bathroom (shared with one other room) for like $550 a month. It is like a 10 minute walk from where I'll be working downtown. Granted for that money I could get a decent room with a private bathroom outside the city. But I'm not planning on spending much time in my bathroom anyway.

We'll see... decisions, decisions...

San Fran is a great town, but it is a hell of a lot more expensive than most towns. I hope your making at least 100K, because any thing less than that will lead to a tough life. But San Fran is a great town and with the shopping and wine country nearby, youll love it!

1) My daughter and I frequent there and we have been blessed without encountering the crime element. It does exist and unfortunately when you work in the financial district it is adjacent to a shady place of town called the Tenderloin district. But do not fret we always stay at hotels in that district and walk at night and we have been lucky with no bad experiences.
2) For a city with that much population cramped in such a small area, the people are generally friendly.
3) you are on the right track about the sublease people but screen wisely.
4) Search weedtracker.com that would help you find a doctor that could write down a recommendation for you. Just bring your medical records so it will be an effortless experience for you. Now it is not mandatory to obtain a 215 card but I do have one so that means in the state of california I can use marijuana medicinally within the current state guidelines. Now if you just had a doctors recommendation then that would just allow you to smoke and/or cultivate within the county you obtained the doctors recommendation.

Good luck with your exodus and I hope you enjoy Frisco like my daughter and I do. That is our favorite city in the county.

Calicat, thank you for the advice.

The main place I was looking at was at 6th St. down from Market St., which google says is near the Tenderloin district. There goes that plan I guess. I don't want to mess around with having my bike or motorcycle stolen, or worse.

There were some other promising places up north of there, towards china town. Bush street? Something like that. I'll look more into those. They were a little more expensive, but probably worth it.

Thanks for the advice. Good to know about the card versus recommendation too. I might just go with a recommendation since I won't be leaving the county often. I probably don't need to hassle with getting a CA drivers license for the recommendation either.

what does your internship entail? and what do you hope to do out of law school? I hope to attend law school after college so I have about a thousand questions; unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with San Fransisco. I was going to go to school there for nursing but switched my major to political science, the school I attend now has a great department but I'm transferring due to horrible location.
