You got busted, you where doing some things right, what where they.
For me, I always kept the grow area clean. I always burnt the mothers after I took all the clones I needed. This kept the excess material out of the grow so it could not be counted as "Dryed material".
I also was always aware of odor, I always ran an ozone generator enough to keep odors down to a minimum, and undetectable outside.
I also burnt all containers and equipment boxes that might alert someone what I was up to.
