Welcome to the World of Hempy thread.

Here we can discuss all things Hempy related and share hints and tips. I'm hoping for lots of member participation with pics of your own efforts. I'll do my best to answer any questions about my experiences and I hope you all will do the same. Lets make this a great thread and extol the virtues of the Hempy!

First thing I guess is to explain what a Hempy is;

Well simply put, a Hempy is a container with a Vermiculite and Perlite mix used to grow our favourite plant. The Vermiculite is a highly absorbant natural mineral, Perlite is described as an amorphous volcanic glass. Both are available at your local hydro store.

+REP for all hempy pics posted

I'm in. It's one of the few ways I haven't grown anything. I want to give it a try, just haven't seen enough knowledge on it. Seems like most people doing it are pulling decent results.
Tell me more, lol.

Ok, as a founding member of WOH, I should introduce my Hempy system.

I run 3 X 600w digital ballasts /w Air-cooled hoods and Carbon filters.
I use a mix of 1:3 / Vermiculite:Perlite and I grow in 2L bottles.
I clone in a DIY spray/mist cloner.

Under my lights I fit 140 Hempys, I currently have around 80 Hempys in flower at present, after my last crop . I rack 21 Hempy's in a 42L container and have cut holes in some 6mm ply to hold the Hempys secure.

I made a little chamber (4ft T5) for some Moms, In there I have some seedlings, 5x Exodus Cheese, 5x Lemon Skunk 5x G13 Haze.

Killer Man. Usually when I see hempy buckets they are just single buckets with holes drilled for drainage a couple inches above the bottom. How is your setup run exactly. Do you water every few days to get rid of old nutes and stale air, or just let them wick. Couldn't tell in the picture. Slick setup man.

Ived tried various hempy ideas. This seems to work easy for me. Regular hempy bottles with holes 2.25 inches from the bottom. The bottles sit in the 42L tub. The tub has a drainage hole. When I feed I slide a tub from under the lights and place the tub over a bucket and water every Hempy by hand.

I now wrap my bottles in Gorilla tape. Its waterproof/lightproof and provides a durable finish.

If I had more height I could make this an auto feeding system and even a recirculating system. Hopefully those with more space will try some fancy 'Hempy trough' setups and post them here

Rinsing out the impurities is best practice when using Vermiculite or Perlite. I started using the small sieve but found this great large garden sieve in the shops which cuts down the time it takes to prepare the hempys. It also helps when it comes to Recycling the used Perlite after harvest (I throw out used Vermiculite).

Subbed and along for the ride, cheers for the link mate tried replying in pm but had no luck seems the site is a bit on the dodgy side lately.
Lovely set-up you have on the go, how do you find your yield growing this way? I know it's a subjective question but can't help but wonder what you would class as your average per clone mate?
they look like lovely little plants, does it take much work sustaining their feed water schedule? or is it as simple as watering a couple of times per week? always wondered how long the small rez in the bottom would last under hps lights whilst in flower.

Thanks Dragon,

Yield per bottle is un-known so far, I've a done this a few times and have really just been suprised I could manage it. Im guessing it's around 14g per bottle but I just don't know. Now there is a Hempy thread, I'll log these details and post the results. I'll be aiming for North of 15g.

The strain I have been doing is Violator Kush, a low yielding strain, I havent been happy with the taste so I have been selling it without cure. I just want to move on to a new strain now but must finish this kush. I should have 60 Cheese going in soonish (just have to fill the cloner)

It is as simple as watering ... I would say 3 times a week is good. Im a lazy grower and have been distracted by my ex-girlfriend lately Ive missed feeding for 4 days without obvious signs. I would say growth slows with lack of feed really.

I need to step this up and start getting more disciplined. Thats part of the reason I want to show my results here, so i dont slack too much.

Great thread man. When I first got into growing Hempy seemed like the perfect method. I've become one of those organic environmental nut cases and do everything in my life as organically or naturally as possible, but I miss the Hempy and will be running one next to my supersoil plant for fun. Both should require very little work once they get going. Anyways you have a great method for packing all those hempys so close and making the watering simple. As for your yield, I only ran one Hempy grow. It was 4 2L bag seed plants that went 12/12 from seed and were under 6x23w Cfls. My nutes weren't complete and they hermied on me late in flower so I cut them early. The point to all this is that each plant still gave me between 10-14g of nasty bud. Considering you have good genetics, much stronger lights, and are growing from clone, I'd guess with some fine-tuning you could get over 20g a plant.

I'll try a few Hempy's. I've got a few clones about done now. I'll throw a couple in some hempy pots, and see what happens. I'll keep posted if anyone wants.

What do you think about a fabric pot Hempy? If i set the pot in a container of nutrient rich water it would act the same as a Hempy with the benefits of a smart pot. I would have used a cat litter box but moebius corrected that mistake for me. I,ll need to make a custom lid that the pot fits in but that allows me to add water to the container without movin the plant around.

Hmm Interesting idea ... Fabric Hempy, I'll have to ponder the issues.

With regards to the cat liter box. You'll notice mine are set in 42L underbed storage boxes. I noticed that the roots try to grow out the holes in the bottom of the hempy while they searched for water in the storage box. If the box was blacked out completely the roots would happily survive outside the hempy.

If your cat liter box was light-proofed, any roots would grow out of the holes and feed directly from the reservoir in the liter-box. My bottles only have 4 holes around the bottom, maybe 6 or 8 holes would allow more roots to grow out. ..... It will work IMO .. but will depend on how light proof the cat liter box was. .... Maybe not a cat-liter box but a black tub with proper lid.

Lots to do in my grow room now i have fully committed to it. Cable tidying, wall mounting ballasts etc ... boring stuff. Yawn

Just fed the girls, this is how I do it atm .... Yes, I know, the tubs should be light-proofed !! LOL

One thing Im learning about my setup is that because the clones go into flower and get no veg time, its important to take a decent clone. Many of the clones I took for this run where very small, some where less than 3" tall (excluding roots). This has meant that many of my hempys are bloody small. ...

I never made this mistake last time but it does show that even a plant that stretches can be kept small. I'll remember this when I'm cloning my Lemon Skunk in a couple of weeks.

Please post pics of your efforts. If you do, others will follow. ... It would be so cool to see different sized bottles, strains, nutes etc. all on one thread.
