would a 400 watt hps get just as much bud as the 600w hps on just 2 plants in the same space i know 600 watts is over kill but it was free

According to the calculator for co2, you don't need much for your grow area. Google co2 for grow rooms and you'll see what I'm saying.

It requires some study. Forget the co2. Get more experience before you use co2. You'll kill em. If you have a 6 inch hood and fan a 600 watter will work..Overkill. I say yes. Run a 400 you'll get a great yield from that. Cooling is important though. 2x2 is small. 400 will handle a 4x4 tent

To be most effective, yes, the grow room should be sealed.

"Now that we know the benefit of adding CO2 to your indoor growing environment, one thing to note is that CO2 enrichment will not be as effective if your grow area is not sealed since it will be exhausted before the plants can use it. Ideally, air should not be exchanged in an out of your grow room. If you have an air-cooled reflector, the air drawn through the fan to cool the bulb must enter and exit the grow area without coming in contact with the air in the grow room. Sealing your grow space allows plants to more completely use the CO2 that you enrich the environment with."

Everyone else has mentioned it'll be overkill because of heat already.
I'm pretty sure a 400 watter will be a whole lot cheaper than a CO2 system.
What I would do if I were you OP would be just going down and buying a new analogue adjustable ballast. It'd run in there just fine at 50% and still give you some nice bud in a 2x2 space and keep the temps low. I'm 99% sure it'll do the job actually.
You could probably get away with knocking it up to 75% as well with your AC going.
Then you can just crank it up as needed if and when you go to a bigger set up. Build a room, tent or whatever.
Is that small closet your only option OP?

400W in a 2x2 is also overkill.

I would consider a 250W HPS, but even then it's overkill.

For a 2x2 footprint, I'd seriously consider DIY cobs. 120-150W of cobs running at ~55% efficiency would give you 16.5W/sqft to 20.6W/sqft of PAR in a 2x2. (30W * 0.55 = 16.5W of PAR)

thats what i was thinking its 99f with cool tub and fans going, and with ac blowing directly in there its 87
my friend gave me a new 600w hps system will it work in a 2x2x8 grow closet ??
It it was me I would sell 600 ballast on ebay and use that $$ to get u a 400. The cool tube will still work. That way you will save $$ on electricity by running a 400 instead of 600 and not having to run AC and at the same time it will alievieate your heat issue. I realize it is free and you want to use it but you will be fighting it the whole time. Besides a 400 would provide you approximately 12,000 lumens per square foot! That's gobs plenty!

couldn't you get a dimmer for the 600w or use LEDs to reduce heat?
i got a bad ass 200 w ds led light it works better then a 300 w hps not much but it defiantly is better, i dont get why people say led lights dnt have heat. my 200w brings the room up 8f moor then when its off

I assume that a lower wattage for equivalent lumen output would make them use less energy and therefore put out less heat -- so they'd also be more efficient/dissipate less heat? I guess based on what you're saying theyre probably just as efficient and put out heat as well...

But if he has a 600w light thats too much, couldn't he pass it through a dimmer -- thus lowering wattage output and heat output?

Everyone is recommending getting a different light but it would be much cheaper and beneficial to just keep your 600 watter and get a bigger tent. Like a 3x3. Cheaper than another lighting system and more yield. Just my opinion.
