When to flower?

I have a plant going and was wondering the same thing, when to flower?... I planned to start it when the plant height is roughly 20 inches to grow to full size around 60 inches.

I flower mine when they are big enough. usually 20-30 days after sprout for me. but a better rule of thumb i go by is when they are 14-20 inches tall. they will double or triple in size during flowering and i like them to end up around 5-5 1/2 feet(depending on strain, of course). that takes into account the height of my pots and light spacing. I mean you can wait until your plant is "sexually mature" but I go by height so i dont play a waiting game with my plants. even though the whole process is a waiting game lol.

your on 6 dark 18 light right? hope its not the other way around. anyways just switch ur lighting schedule to 12light/12dark and flowering will start. also switch to nutes that have a higher P and K than N for flowering.

thanks so much for this visual observation approach......interesting, and cetainly have to keep in mind....
When the nodes alternate, your plants are ready to flower. You can keep them in the vegatative stage to promote more growth, but keep in mind that plants double to triple in heoght during the flowering stage.

To better explain alternating nodes, i have drawn up some diagrams with paint. (im no artist) But check the diagrams below.

In this diagram, the plants are NOT ready to start the flowering cycle.

In this diagram, the plants IS ready to start the flowering cycle.
hey GK....as always very very valuable! thanks!

I recommend people flower primarily on their set up. The amount of lighting is usually the MOST important factpr. If a grower is using CFLs, 3 month is way to long.

Actually, except for outdoor growing, 3 months seems far to long to grow any plant in the vegetative stage. In 3 months a single plant can be 4 feet tall and fill an entire closet. When you induce flowering, this plant may shoot up to 5 or 6 feet. To light a plant of that size properly could very well require 1000 watts HPS from the top and another 1000 watts of fluorescents from the sides. If you have the ability to do this kind of lighting, the rewards will be substantial!!!! But most people do not have the ability, for one reason or another, to preform of grow of this nature.

This is a plant that was flowered at 15 days old and only 4 inches tall, using CFLs for lighting. It havested 3 ounces incuding a 17 gram main cola.

and NOW you KNOWM[/img]
thanks for bringing this forward again DO....an interesting observable change in the plants....I'll have to keep my eyes open for this and see what kinds correlations I get with my grows.... thanks!
This is a great thread, just bringing it back so anyone who missed it can read it. Knowm, can you really go a little more in detail for us about how you produced that much bud from a small plant? That's approximately the same size as mine may turn out to be, so I'm hoping for success like that in my first grow!

Right on when that one guy said they're ready to induce or will soon flower when the nodes alternate, but let me add my chips. A simply geometrical solution to your outdoor flowering problems. Say you want an early harvest, maybe they're getting stressed, etc. Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. 1. I hope everyone knows morning sun is best for plants, if you can rotate your plants in a bucket every week or so your plant will respond with love and you'll get branches upon branches. 2. To induce flowering outdoors, place camouflage in front of the eastern side of the plant, use a board, or logs in addition to some evergreen bows or something. By being creative in the field you are essentially blocking any usable light maybe thirty degrees in respect to the horizon. Try for more.. Great right? Are there any other ways to take advantage of the suns geometry and your plant? Let's take it a step further, put your bucket plant on a hill, hill bottom east, hill top west, and then adjust camouflage accordingly. DRAMATIC RESULTS!!!

Just because your own circumstances (as does everyones) dictates when you should put your plants into flower doesn't mean that it's the genetically correct time for the plant to be put into flower! At the end of the day it depends entirely on what you want to get from your plants, if you feel flowering earlier than 'sexual maturity' gives you the results you're looking for, then that's the right thing to do for YOU - it still doesn't mean it's the right thing for the plant.

For these plants to give their best and for them to fulfill their fullest 'genetic potential' they should be flowered when they're sexually mature enough to flower - and that is when the nodes start alternating. By flowering at the correct time that plant will have the best opportunity to fulfill it's maximum genetic potential and therefore give the vest best possible results it can.

Older, sexually mature plants produce more Cannabinoids than immature young plants, by flowering too early, you're not letting the plant fulfill it's fullest genetic potential - that's your choice - but it certainly does not make it 'the right thing' for everyone.

The right time to flower is when the plant is sexually mature enough to flower, just because peoples circumstances or situations make it difficult to follow that only makes it right for their own situation and circumstances - not necessarily right for the plant !
This is, simply put, correct. You can flower your plants whenever you want, BUT, in order for your plant to reach it's FULL potential, you must wait for the plant to become "Sexually Mature". When your plant grows in the "Alternating Internode" pattern, it has reached that point, and will produce the best weed that it is capable of producing, period. Growroom height restrictions are the main reason that LST, SOG, SCROG, as well as "Topping" and "FIM"ing, were all tried and perfected. It takes nothing to tie your plant down when it's starting to get too tall.

if you veg a mother that is fully mature and you take clones, will the clones be "mature" once they are well rooted since theyll be taken from a mature mother? im guessing the alternating node thing works only from seed.

:peace::wall: Picture this, me reading this last post, shaking my head and laughing. Can ya picture it? Don't take this personal ganjadav420, but it looks like you have a bit of a reading comprehension problem. There are several posts in this thread, including mine, that explain things very clearly. Please go back and read it again, and read it slowly this time. It is a FACT, that ALL Cannabis plants, NOT certain strains, will become sexually mature when vegged long enough. Then, and only then will your plant produce the best weed it is genetically capable of producing. This has nothing to do quantities. One last thing, that must have been some kinda "Super-duper genetic freak of nature" plant you had there to yield you OVER A POUND("470g") of weed when vegged only three(3) weeks. I hope you have more of those seeds bro, or you took clippings! LMAO! Come on man, be serious. I have grown numerous plants that yielded over a pound each, and they were vegged at least 8-10 weeks, outside, and all of them ended up between 6 and 7 feet tall. There's NO WAY a plant that was vegged for three weeks, and was prolly only 18"-24" tall, if that, gave up a pound of weed. Sorry babe, I ain't buying it.:peace:
