what's legalization done for underground growers?

Interested if there are any growers from any legal states here and what it's done for your business.

I'm a medical grower in a state looking to legalize rec. I'm optimistic about the prospect of opening myself up to the public in a store front. But realize it's probably going to be a limited amount of stores in the state making the chances like a lottery...

Curious how it's effected those with some lights in their basement. My thought is there's always going to be budweiser but some people are always going to want craft small batch beer

What's your thought

Zips were about 350 to500 an ounce in the 2000s. In 2015 I have seen them go for as low as 50 bucks with all the resin heads all broke off. A lot of crap out there too. It's pretty much what strains you got that sells. I know I might catch hell but I won't sell my cuts been asked a bunch. I just keep to my same story I don't grow.

It's too bad because greedy growers are producing more than they can get rid of, then they drop the price to unreasonable levels. I'm in a med state, I just keep my patients happy and it keeps me happy.

If you don't have the demand don't grow it. All these noobs lighting up warehouses and then realize it puts out way more than their patients/friends want... Kills me, fucking it up for everyone

And that's without it being rec here... Like I said some people are always going to want small batch craft so I'm sure it'll all work out

The vast majority of recreational weed here in Colorado gets sold to out of state visitors. Underground growers at still blowing up basements and supplying friends. Rec prices are ridiculous so its not hard for growers to beat them and still make a profit while delivering a better product as well.

How are you not a greedy grower also if you want prices to stay inflated? Consumers ultimately decide what reasonable prices are,not producers.

I can walk down the street with half pound on me and not even trip. No more sketching out on cops. That's the best part. There's less money and more competition. Millions of newbs jumping in and running business and fucking up the market with their shwag top shelf. Years and years ago I made so much money flipping pot. I spent a lot more on legal fees when I got busted. That whole song and dance is a thing of the past

Hopefully it runs assholes like that right out of the business.

The underground has been booming but also gone to shit at the same time in CO.

Yeah you can find people selling $20 1/8ths or $100 ounces driving prices down, but at the same time the quality has gone to shit with a lot of people just trying to cash in on the boom. Hell I'd go back to paying $50 1/8th if I could get some of the product I got 5 or more years ago. Anymore people are just selling crap weed with a buzzword name, probably following some generic nute regiment, and not drying/curing/trimming it properly. Then when you do find someone who actually has quality product they're usually out of stock or have limits on how much you can buy. Like I found this guy with some potent ass purple trainwreck and he wouldn't sell anyone more than 1/8th a week.

I'm not a greedy grower but people selling $50-100 oz's are typically doing so because they produced way more than they have means of getting rid of. Everyone deserves to be paid fairly for the time/risk they put in. Even though it's state legal it's still not federally... Risk and time are worth something

Calling me greedy and calling me an asshole is a bit far fetched when you don't know me...

And if producers are willing to practically give the stuff away because of massive overgrows they are setting the price, consumers love price wars

Prices in Canada have been hovering around 100 bucks an ounce for a long time on this coast. And that's top shelf. Less per unit. 1000-1200. Recently they've gone up a bit, but that will probably change as I don't expect prices to stay high at all.

I get that but the quality has been diluted quite a bit, which is where I find that most of it has gone to shit. Even a lot of dispensaries have pretty shitty weed as they cut corners to get product out and increase profit margins. It's like most people are producing bud light's which is fine for the masses but I wouldn't mind paying more for a 'craft' product.

I'm sure production has a little bit to do with it but for the most part dispensary prices have stayed the same, while blackmarket prices are obviously lower it's hard to find quality bud when there's a lot of people new to growing buying their legal limit in clones and selling low quality weed it really dilutes the market. Then people get pissed when you tell them you know a guy with some fire and wants $35-$45 for an 1/8th even though it's likely 1000% better than the shit they've been toking on. Then there's the concentrate market which is probably more fucked up with crap product (I don't buy black market concentrates much anymore) and people endangering the lives of others trying to make a quick buck. At least with dispensary concentrates they're generally pretty pure and safely made.

Growers that sell weed by the oz dont really have a large effect on the market (pound prices). And if there are growers that produce more than they can move, they fail rapidly and dont have a lasting effect on the market. Selling it for way cheaper than what other people can manage to produce it for only works once, then you cant pay the operating costs for subsequent grows.

Even though it is still illegal federally, the chances of having legal issues and doing time are way lower in a med/rec state. That extra $1000-1500 included in a pound price used to be the brass balls tax that was earned for taking such a risk (and facing lower competition).

I predict for all the basement and spare bedroom growers that major price wars will come especially when they lay their taxing scheme on the already outrageous taxes in the states where it is legalized. I am beginning to think that within the next 2 yrs, they will federally legalize it with 50% tax rate on top of the state/local taxes and it's going to fold up all the dispensaries and everything will go back underground and be a cash-only business but the amount of home growers will explode across the nation and major price wars will go on for a while. I predict that WHEN this happens, for many underground growers, in the immediate months following a federal legalization with huge taxes laid on, that for maybe a year there will be a small window of time for good underground growers to make some seriously good money because I think all the dispensaries will fold up from not being able to make a profit. I do not think this time period will last long because MANY new growers will come onto the scene. Then I predict prices will drop like a rock after a nationwide underground stabilization takes place on the market. For those already experienced that grow, I think it will bring a MASSIVE gold rush for underground growers when the dispensaries start folding up, though it probably will only last for up to a year.

Imagine being able to get 350 or so for an ounce on the street then 9 months later not even being able to get 100 for an ounce. Anyway, if this article comes to fruition that talks about a 50% federal tax rate, then there will be a major but short lived opportunity and window to make a major wad while the market price skyrockets before the stabilization kicks in. >

Oh hell yeah brother! There ain't nothin like drinkin beer straight from the brewery. Same goes with smoking cannabis that comes from the farmer. When you have a connection the whole experience gets lifted to higher levels. Especially when someone like yourself takes care of the garden with love and passion it shines through to the product and people dig that shit.

Others just want the lowest price they can possibly get it for. I totally understand these people too because at one time I felt I was forced to live that life of, well should I get an oz of this b grade or a quarter of some straight dank dank. Half the time I went with the lower grade and kicked myself for it because I like to truly enjoy the experience.

Plenty of guys out there like us who want love and variety, not that the commercial people can't give their plants love but it is a whole nother ball game when you are going from 1-99 plants to 100-100000 plants.

I'm not in a legal state, but there's no way legalization would impact me at all. Dispensary's could never match the quality and price point I could establish, if they ever could meet my current price point and be profitable. I've seen dispensary's drop prices on their lowest grade to the mid to low $100 (zips) range on rare occasions, but I can go down the block and get their highest grade off the street for $125 (zips) all day...in the Bay. I was hanging for a second and the guys that were selling all their gear out there burst out in a pissing contest about how cheap they get their herb per oz. They get them for as low $60 a zip. Demand will never be met and quality will always command a higher ticket.
