what kind of job can an 18 year old high school dropout get?

my little cousin called me up today asking if i could get her a job at my work, which sadly i can't even do since the company requires at least a ged (which is what i have). unfourtunatly here you can't get that until you're 19 unless your school signs for it (which they wouldn't do for her) so until she turns 19 and gets that she has no actual education to show for.

i told her fast food or bagging groceries since that's all i could think of at the moment, but that sounds kind of shitty. do you guys know of any jobs that take people with no experience and train them? or any jobs better than flipping burgers that she can possibly get?

and i told her she could probably just say she graduated on applications and they wouldn't check for it.. but i don't even know if that's true so i want to call her and let her know if she shouldn't do that. i'd feel like shit if i got her in trouble.

i'm 21, and have one more semester college before i have my degree, and even i cant find decent work. Your 18 year old dropout cousin is unfortunately probably fucked in this economy. If she gets a job bagging groceries or flipping burgers i say she should be stoked. I couldn't, which is why i went back too school. Now ive got okay work. But i could use more.

Has she considered Bartending? My girl says she could make mad money at that if she knows what shes doing and has decent common sense/people skills.

Tell your cousin, learn how to do real work- work on a farm!

It'll nurture physical strength, independent thinking and and a work ethic that will prepare you for anything.

Paper round, car washing, babysitting, sales assistant...

Has she any talents? If you don't ask, you don't get. Both my mother and I have gotten alot of arts and media based jobs by showing up with enthusiasm and a good portfolio. In this economic climate, the best way to let an employer know you're a keeper is to show them. Prove it.

Tell her to go beg for an internship/apprenticeship if she has to. Jobs don't land in your lap everyday and at least you'll get your foot in the door.

tell her to be a waitress, preferably at an expensive resturant or one that serves alot of alcohol, like a micro brewery. my boy works at a german microbrew/resturant and easily pulls in 120-200 a night average. i say an expensive place/microbrew bc the bills are always high and tips are proportional to the bill. NOT olive garden or something like that (chilies, applebees etc) bc they all have cheap unlimited item. 7.99 all u can eat salad soup and breadsticks= like a 1$ tip, chilis and bees has thos 2 for 20$ things another shitty tip. but a steak house with a couple of drinks can easily run a two top table 100$=big tip

LMAO...

The saddest part is that girl is going to find work due to one thing, being a girl... when people with college educations are taking pay cuts upwards of 50% just to work again.

If she is even a 6 out of 10 she could make good money waiting tables, tending bar, or something like that where she can use her female-ness to con lonely dudes out of big tips.

nahh you just gotta know where to look.
i dropped out young as fuck and barely passed my ged, but i'm pulling an average 70 a year.

but yeah girls have that advantage, so i want her to find somthing that will give her good experience for a better job down the line.

If your cousin isn't a slob she should try her hand at being a food server. I've been serving during semester breaks for awhile now and the money is great. I have many co-workers who treat serving as a career have no problem supporting themselves on the daily. No DT is nice as well.

Safeway hires everyone

Good benefits, paid vacation, paid holidays, lots of good shit

i been there 4 years i'm making 18 an hour as a meat cutter, 40 hours a week.

i dropped out of high school and without safeway i would never be able to finance and grow the plants that i have in the last few years.

yeah i was thinking sales position at a clothing store like nordstrom, plus i mean shes a pretty young lady and that's kind of what they want there.

we don't have safeway here so maybe just any grocery store in the area she could apply.

as of right now she can't go into job training or anything you have to pay for, i just want her to find somewhere that she can make decent money until she gets her ged.
but nobody answered if she should or shouldn't lie on an application. i'm thinking no just becuase in these days its a lot easier to find that kind of thing out. and lying would just screw her over.

Tell her to move to a place near an engineering school for her M.R.S. degree. Its all dudes who are desparate, intelligent and will most likely make good money. ex. Michigan Technological University

Yeah sales position would be a good start for a young lady.

I've had friends lie on their resume and application and say they graduated, but if she's young they might check, but when shes 21+ I don't think anyone would bother calling the school. It all depends on the state and the child labor laws if she would have to be signed off on to work. If she has a common name, or someone who went to school with her name graduated, its not like they have DOB and SSN to compare up all the statistics even if they wanted to.
If she's a morning person, I know almost all the stores have the sign crews come in the early morning. You don't have to work with customers, just do your task set before you, then go home. So maybe someplace like macys, jcpenney, etc. But not as sales, as merchandiser or signage crew. Sales is kinda soul sapping. But a job is just a job.
