Looks like some kind of larval stage damage = think caterpillar here.

Caddisfly larval stage is in rivers and streams.....They live in a cool "house" they build for themselves.

At this stage, removed from the "house" - they make great bait for Small mouth Bass and the native trout in that river/stream too.

The other part of the story is that. It looks like the offending bug took a few bites and went "BLEEH!" and moved on. Cannabis has that effect on many leaf eaters.
Yeah, whatever did it, I agree with you here. Compost tea foliar. Probably some nice fungi guard got into it's gut. ;)
