The ballast i have goes from 400 to 1000. Right now the i have it on 420 :-) but would like to push it to 500..possible? or would it pop explode and die?

You can put it up to 1000 and it will still blow

Why not get a bigger bulb?
I tried to run 500 watts on a 600 watt bulb and it produces almost the same amount of lumens as the 400 on the 420 setting. If i use 600watts my room becomes a little too hot, so the sweet spot is 500w. Yea i could ad more fans and etc. but if i take in all the factors including my electric bill 500 is perfect.

The manual for my Gavita Digistar ballast says that MH bulbs should always be run at the wattage the bulb is designed for. No dimming or boosting.

Might be different for other ballasts though.

Just because you shouldn't do it doesn't mean that MH can't be 'dimmable'.
