i push the entire metal probe into the soil and leave about an inch of the metal showing. the metal on my probe is about 12 inches long so on mine it gets pushed in to about 11 inches leaving the plastic meter over it

as a rule of thumb on my plants i do not water them until the leaves droop just a tiny bit and i can stick my finger into the soil and feel it is almost dry (never let them dry out though), i also gently lift the pot up to see how heavy it is. so, for example, immediately after watering ur plant lift the pot to see how it feels in weight after watering, this is your base as far as weight goes. use these methods and your meter to keep the plants happy. the more you observe your plants and connect with them the more in sync you'll be to their needs

peace :)

at what number on my meter should i water? should i water before it gets to the red, or wait till it gets in the red? I know that i would have normally water twice buy now, but still says im at 10, but i was overwatering so guess it took awhile to dry out.

3/4's of the way into your pot.

let your soil dry almost completly before watering again. if you keep them to moist you will stunt your growth.
