how about starting the Captcha thing for new accounts, this might deter or at least make these dam spam posters (Like we had 3 or 4 of in the last 2 weeks) work to open an account, then as one did, do down the list of forum sections posting his crap for some place in Somalia or something (I really don't remember where).

Thanks for your suggestion. Believe me, those 3 or 4 that you have seen are actually about 1 percent of the spammers that post here. The other 99 percent are caught, and their posts never show up. I ban about 100 spammers a day.

Captcha and recaptcha have been compromised. Xrumors bots have no problems figuring these out anymore.. Q/A Captcha is your best bet but stay away from easily solvable math questions. Human spammers are an entirely different problem about all you can do to prevent them is by disabling their ability to post links without a minimum post count. (still ineffective) At minimum i would attribute a no follow rule so that google at least wont increase their page rank from all the backlinks posted by spammers. (vB4 might have this as stock) otherwise im sure a plugin is available.

I've always been curious... Of the few spammers that I see that get through their join dates always seem to be from a while ago. The last few were from various months in 2010. Do they think that far ahead and make a bunch of dummy accounts or are these old, unused accounts that haven't been used in a while that have been hacked, or something?

Most spam attempts are automated, a script that allows the spammer to break the tasks down as they see fit. Part one being registration then the second part would flood the forums with spam.. Other times they target Inboxes of the PM system hoping to fly under the radar a bit longer.. Others simply try to insert a link in the website url field on its profile page..

I understand that but my question still remains... These accounts that I have seen were registered 2010... So do these spammers think that far ahead and register a bunch of accounts to be used in the future or are they hacking into accounts that are already registered but are maybe unused?

They have been known to be very crafty so the short answer would be yes..
Very Unlikely.. Hacking specific accounts from inactive members is beyond the scope of the Xrumors script. so i would venture a guess and say No.
