Unlurking - Vintage Blueberry

Hi everybody, I had been lurking since 2011 before I popped into the AK Bean Brains thread last November when I was starting a grow. Started 10 seeds, gave away a few of the starters, was left with 3 Vintage Blueberry and 3 Afghan 1 X Black Afghani from AK Bean Brains. Unfortunately, I ended up with just 1 female, but she's looking nice so I thought I'd start a journal.

Growing in a 4x8 under 2 Spider Farmer SF4000. Roots organic soil and nutes. First time actually brewing the Terp Tea from roots. Also ended up being my first SCROG, since I only had one plant and plenty of room to experiment.

Here are a few starters, the eventual female is the one on the bottom right being bent. One month after popping the seeds. I ended up cloning the big male next to her. I've got a few clones from a friend and a clone of the VBB female in another tent now to chuck some pollen around.

45 days. The female is on the bottom and looking a little ugly at this point. Naturally I was a little disappointed at this point when she was the only one showing me girl parts! I actually have both the males in this photo cloned and in the pollen chucking tent.

83 days. I vegged for 90. She looks a lot better here. I winged it with the SCROG. I think it turned out fairly well.

14 days of 12/12. Had a little deficiency at the end of veg but I think she's come around nicely. A few minor setbacks and she's resilient as hell.

Anyway, I've been at this growing indoor for about five years with varying results. But I'm thinking this might be a good one and thought I'd share after getting good info from this place over the years without ever coming out of my hole!

Chop Day! Day 53. Didn't expect to this early but I got the scope out this morning and saw a decent amount of amber (to where I usually chop). I'm not a super terp identifier, but I've smelled blueberry all along and but I'm smelling some cherry cough syrup too. Didn't weigh it wet, yield should be solid. Nice solid buds. First time SCROG, I think I'm going to take more off the bottoms next time.

Got a copy of her almost ready to flower, debating whether I should take more cuts or start something new.

Comments are welcome!

Looks good but I'd wait 2-3 more weeks at least and keep feeding her

Too late. But I've got a clone of her that'll be ready to flower soon. I looked at trichromes under my microscope and had about 10-15% amber on the bud, which surprised me since you can't really see it in the photo or with the naked eye. That's about where my preferences are, so I went with that and chopped.

I'll probably feed a little heavier with the next run.

I know a guy that was chopping in the day 60 range, I convinced him to wait until day 70 or 80 and he was much more happy with the results. It turned out seeing some ambers didnt really always mean it is ready. Clone only strains are usually hunted for and breeders try to find a good potency cut with an early harvest window, but the reality is that most strains need at least 70 days to finish ripening.
The cues I look for are the calyx receding into the pistil , and the pistils swelling up almost like they're filled with seeds or bursting with resin. Some of the calyx come back out and then usually the branches start to bend down from the added weight. Waiting a few more weeks also results in more yield, the hard part is being able to keep them healthy that long!

Blueberry was known for quick finishing times but I still think you needed to wait at least a week or so before finishing her out. As long as you are happy with the product that is whats important! One thing to remember is peak potency doesnt always mean a few amber, and every phenotype from seed can be different from one another. When you wait longer to harvest you are getting denser nugs, leading to a better dry and cure as well
