Ultimate DIY carbon filter

First off let me start by saying that this is a combination of different do it yourself carbon filters that I have seen out there. I have combined them and the results are pretty impressive so far. I cannot even smell the ona gel that is setting baking under my HPS lights and it cost $36+ tax.


Components:


6" Duct collar - $5
6" Duct cap - $5
Odor control carbon filter - $10
Scotchbright reusable wipes - $4
Aquarium active carbon - $6
Honeywell replacement filter - $6

The first this I did was take the odor control filter and separate the fabric portion from the plastic grill and cut it in half (because I wanted a shorter carbon filter). I then rolled the plastic grill into a 6in diameter tube and capped it with the duct collar on one end and the duct cap on the other.


Put duct tape around where the grill and the collar meet and where the grill and the cap meet.


Cut a 12" square from the honeywell replacement filter and took the remainder, folded it in half lengthwise (should not be approx 6" x 36") and rolled it into a tight 6" long roll that then will get shoved in to the tube that was created with the plastic grill and collar&cap.

Take the Scotch Brite wipes and fold them in half and sew it into a pouch, I then pour the Aquarium active carbon and sew the pouch closed so it resembles a pillow stuffed with active carbon.

Take the fabric material from the odor control filter and wrap that around the outside of the plastic grill and secure it with some twine, I used metal wire.



Place the active carbon "pillow" and put it inside of the tube and secure it in place with the 12" square of odor control filter.

I attach this to the 6" intake and hung this in the top of the cabinet.



I also built a second one without the pillow and Honeywell filter and use that to muffle the exhaust noise, but this is not required.

Still bet it wont last/out perform a real cf...i tried the lil prefilter squares n shit wat gonna try carbon rock too but i find its easier to spend 120$ every year or so on a new one

Mostly what he's paying for is the active ingredients, the part that actually does the scrubbing. I'm betting it will last a long time. I've made DIY carbon filters and they work great. No need to spend hundreds of dollars for a little bit of sheet metal that does the same thing.

The way it is put together, you can easily swap out the active carbon "pillow" any time to refresh the filter for $6.
