[UK] Drug-testing device used at pubs and clubs

Hi-tech equipment used in operation in Aberdeen

Pubs and clubs north of the border have been taking part in tests using a pioneering portable drug detection machine.

More than 750 would-be customers at nine venues in Aberdeen had their hands swabbed with a device called the Itemiser at the weekend - the first time it has been used by police in Scotland.

The tests come at the same time as fresh reports of widespread use of cheap cocaine in bars across Scotland – and follows on from a Paisley initiative in which stewards use hand-held metal wand devices to detect knives.

The Itemiser can tell whether someone has been handling illegal substances including cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and cannabis.

Chief Inspector Innes Walker of Grampian Police, said: “So far we have had a very positive response from licensees in the city centre, who are keen to work with the police to ensure their premises remain drug free.”

Following the Aberdeen trial run 13 people were searched on suspicion of carrying drugs and two face possible prosecution.

Mark Donlevy, general manager of city centre nightclub Liquid, said: “We carry out random searches on customers anyway, and our typical student and 18-21 patrons don’t tend to be drug users, but the machine is still useful.

“It is sophisticated enough to be able to tell the difference between, say, someone who has touched paper money with drug traces and someone who has actually been handling drugs.

“They probably won’t have drugs on them – but the fact they’ve been in possession alerts our security staff to turn them away.”

seems like a massive waste of tax payers money , but when the english gov can spend nearlly a million pounds on a bronze statue of murdererer and terrorist nelson mandella , whilst old war veterrans freeze to death coz they cant afford heating, then nothing will suprise me really .

actually it reminds me of a cops eposode the other week , they had a device testing the steering wheels on cars for drugs , they pulled this girl over and found traces of amphetamines on her stearing wheel , she said my brother uses this car , and the cop just said ok , bye then , and she drove off, what a total waste of time and money

yea, this device doesnt do anything to stop drug use, it will only prevent less cleanly drug users from being able to go to a bar or a pub or a club. this device basically only makes alcohol look better when in reality it is much worse for your body.

Don't carry your stash in public places and you'll be ok. Its obvious they do a quick test, and anyone who tests positive is searched.

From there, I don't think they can get a warrant or anything to search ones premises. Searching ones person is pretty bizarre, and anyone having to subject themselves to a test against their will simply for being in a public place is seriously having their freedom infringed upon.

Not sure what the laws are like in the UK, but its appears to be a police state. Not saying the USA is any better, we have cops using tasers on people who are just speaking loudly.

If there is truly no probable cause, other than someone is a certain age and could be using drugs than a random search should be deemed illegal. Its not like a random search on a roadway where vehicles and licenses are concerned. You don't need a special license to be in a club and operate on your two feet. Its insane that any form of government could be allowed to step in and randomly search your person for anything.

People need to stand up to government and stop their local law enforcement agencies from becoming para-military goon squads with no respect for civil liberties.

I take it most, if not all of you have heard of the knife problem we have in the UK at the moment, well the governments answer was random stop & search!

Yes this country is well on the way to being a police state, we have more CCTV cameras per person than anywhere in the world (be warned, first they said that no residential areas would be covered but as soon as the town and city centres were kitted out it crept out to "trouble spots" in residential areas, and yes camera operators have been caught using them to look in peoples homes at people getting dressed and such like.

We have the largest DNA database in the world, with about 10% of the population on it, first it was only violent/sex offenders/suspects, now it's anyone arrested for anything, man, woman or child! People being found not guilty or not even being charged still have their DNA permanently added to the database.

Even if you volunteer to give DNA when they have a major investigation going they now keep that on the database too!(just in case you or a blood relative ever commit a crime)

We are more like Stalin's dream than the USSR ever was, I just wish a) I had the money to leave and b) that I didn't have a criminal record barring me from all the best country's:wall::peace:

Fuck, you could probably come to SA... apparently our government loves illegal aliens... we have 0 border controls...
You'd have everything here you have there... except with sunlight most of the time...
Of coarse you'd have to stay in cape town... (pot head central)
Cheap good food... (very few food imports needed)
Our girls just love the pommy accent, so you'll get laid for sure.
1 GBP buys 15 rand, so you'll be rich if you got a tenner in your pocket.
You don;t have to worry about the cops, because they don;t even come when you call... they have better things to do... or in some cases simply don;t have licences to drive...
