ttystikk's hydro technique.

So I might as well start at root level.

I ran RDWC for years with good success. More recently, I have been using Tupur Royal Gold substrate. Interestingly, I use the very same nutrients with both, in the same ratios.

Hydro-gardens.com is the bunch who make the dry nutrient salts. I use their hydroponic special 5-11-26 with micro nutrients, in conjunction with calcium nitrate, magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) and occasionally even a bit of MKP, or monopotassium phosphate.

Veg
2 parts mix
2 parts calcium nitrate
1 part epsom salt

I've run this all the way through bloom with good results.

I have some bloom formulas as well but I haven't tested them more than once or twice.

I was running about EC 2.0 at pH 5.8 in RDWC and EC 2.4 at pH 6.0 in Tupur. These may not be ideal but again they produced good results.

There's no magic in the nutrients. Keeping things simple and consistent works just fine.
Noticed you are adding quite a bit of phosphate, I'd be scared that it would bind too much of your calcium,
I'd definitely try to dose amino acids to increase the actual uptake of the available calcium.

I guess the test to see if you get enough in, is to check if you get powdery mildew.

Where's your calcium?
Calcium Nitrate has the same quantity in the mix as the 4-20-39.
The Magnesium Sulfate is about 1/2 the mix.

Hydro-Gardens and Charlie have their act together. I will probably add a little MKP. The hydro mix seems to be taking off.

A little worried about the stretch. Anything to slow down stretch.

You're saying you think that 11% phosphorus is excessive?

was stoned too early, thought I saw you adding MKP as well as another phosphate, I see now it was Epsom salts, but it is still a sulphate, that can bind to form bone, calcium sulphate.
If no problems are evident, I wouldn't worry about it.

No problems; works great!

I never pack Tupur tightly, I just fill the bag and tap it on the floor a few times to settle it.

The main thing to remember about it is that you have to let the plant dry out between waterings. If it's still wet when you add more you risk drowning it.
Periodically running 1/4 strength feed through coco to wash away accumulated salts seems to be a pretty common procedure with folks using coir. Do you do anything similar with your setup?

Also, what are your thoughts on DTW (drain to waste)?

I do not do that, I just don't run extremely high EC or strange mixes. I feed the plants the same thing every time.

You can certainly run drain to waste. This means making sure that at least 5 to 10% of your watering volume runs off.

You're already running twice the phosphate I am. Why would you want even more?

Maybe this would go better if people asked me questions?
ttystikk's Q&A session has officially begun. Now I can bomb you with a ton of questions without feeling like a pest haha.

Could you give us the latest scoop on what your current process is like for vert growing (from cuttings all the way to harvest)? Going through the hundreds of pages of your grow journal is daunting, to say the least.

@ttystikk idea: maybe we could use this thread as a central repository of accumulated knowledge/info of your techniques? This way, you could just link people here if they are wondering about any specifics about your methods in the future.

How many CFLs do I need to use to get a lb?

We'll think about it and get back to you.

Real simple; take cuttings, root them, let them grow tall, trellis them and light them from the side, bloom for a couple of months, done!

It's not complicated...

Huh. Wow, it almost sounds too easy.

About how tall are you letting them get in veg before putting them on the trellis to bloom?

And are you pruning/topping much at all throughout any of this?

I let them get 3' tall above the soil line before I put them on a trellis. They'll get another few weeks of veg once there. I do too them and I don't have any hard and fast rules about it yet, other than keeping the number of branches off the mainstem down to a small number, like six or less.

Hey ttystikk im running my first vert and ive only got a single 315w CMH. Where do I positon my bulb? At the moment I have it in the middle of one my plants, but for my shorter one its level with the top. Does it matter?

Ive found running a bulb and not cob panels i have to judge my plants growth and stretch better next time, as they share the same light source.
