An elected Liberal government would begin working to legalize and regulate marijuana "right away," Justin Trudeau says.

"The Liberal Party is committed to legalizing and regulating marijuana," Trudeau said, in response to a reporter's question in Surrey, B.C., on Wednesday.

The Liberal Party Leader declined to set a firm timeline for legalization, but vowed to make it an early priority if elected on Oct. 19.

He said legalizing marijuana would fix a "failed system" and help "remove the criminal element" linked to the drug.

Trudeau went on to accuse Conservative Leader Stephen Harper of implementing anti-marijuana policies that allow the drug to fund "criminal organizations, street gangs and gun-runners."

"It is our intention to stop Mr. Harper's failed approach on marijuana," Trudeau added.

Trudeau said legalization could happen anywhere from a month to "a year or two" into a Liberal government, but he would make sure the process gets underway shortly after taking power.

The Liberal Party's recently-released costing platform does not include a plan to regulate or tax marijuana.

Trudeau addressed that matter on Wednesday, saying that his party would want to look at best practices in other jurisdictions, before deciding on how best to regulate it in Canada.

"We believe in being responsible and realistic in the costing of our plans," Trudeau said. "We didn't book for tax revenues for marijuana because we don't yet know what rate we're going to be taxing it."

Trudeau has voiced his support for relaxing marijuana laws in the past, but he has largely stayed away from addressing the issue during the election campaign.

On Sept. 2, Trudeau said he was not "comfortable" with the idea of seeing marijuana sold in corner stores. "At this point, I don't think corner stores necessarily are rigorous enough at checking ID to make me comfortable with that as an option," he said at the time.

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has said, in the past, that he supports decriminalizing marijuana. However, he has not committed to legalizing it.

Harper has often criticized Trudeau for his pro-marijuana stance. Last month, he said most Canadians "do not want the full legalization of marijuana."

How is a year or 2 RIGHT AWAY? Umm no it better be the first fucking thing you do. And this is why we can't vote for this slime ball. Glad there's going to a minority government this time around.

Why not a built by Canadians for Canadians approach.
A real effort at fairness for everyone that could be adopted elsewhere rather than using something that may or may not work elsewhere. Re:Harpco
That's just not the canadian way.
We copy what others are doing except we spend twice as much then wonder why it doesn't work.

Trudeau will try to legalize right away so his and all of his friends lp stock will take off immediately.
Home growers will be jailed so lps can further monopolize a market that activists and patients have been fighting for for years.
Fuck that.

Tweed.

I don't care if someone makes money and I can smoke some pot without ever hurting anyone as usual and not go to jail for it.

Couldn't care less if someone makes money, I care that I can smoke weed without going to jail.

I care that those of us that need it won't be able to afford it and no one will be allowed to grow their own.
Have u seen the prices in Colorado?
Jt keeps saying he wants the co model or something like it and we all bitch now about lp prices wait til the gov gets their hands and tax on it

I really don't know what will happen.
I honestly do believe that the differences in med prices across the board Can vs US will be a factor. I also honestly believe in supply and demand.

A legal system opens up the market so producers are forced to compete and lower prices, unlike our Telecom and tv services ;) not enough of those lol

ya... the "right away or in up to two years" kinda makes me wonder but... REALLY??? It's going to take longer than that to get it right even if they started now.
..So may as well START NOW!!! :)

Unfortunately I do think that's what jt's plan is. I think if he wanted to get patients and more of the mj friendly crowd to vote for him he would have banged the "I will allow home grows" drum for the extra 100 thousands votes he would have gained.
The fact that they have all been super vague about their mj policies has me worried. I hope I'm wrong but it doesn't look good for home growers in Canada unless the courts continue to strike stuff down.

If they legalize it they can't tell you you can't grow it for yourself.
It's just like potatoes or making beer at home.
In the logical world your right 100%
However when was the last time our government did the most logical thing in any situation.
They can do whatever they like and most of the time that's what benefits them the most.
I wish it were as straight forward as you guys think but I think if any candidate was as open about mj and home grows as some of you think then they would be selling that point for extra votes.

I think it makes the most sense to vote for whichever candidate has the best chance of pushing out the fuehrer in your neighbourhood.
In my hood ndp has won every election since I've lived here
