Too many roots?

How do you know when your roots are too thick? Meaning if you have numerous pants in a container, at what point do the roots get so thick that they star to choke each other?

When drainage becomes an issue, it`ll be closely followed by oxygen starvation. The first signs will be similar to overwatering (root suffocation).

Thanks Atomizer, Im doing a grow in an aerogarden. I don't do drainage other than dumping the existing water everyweeek and going with a new batch with Advanced Nutes. I have two large (5") air stones at work. Other than once it is too late, what am I looking for in the roots themselves?

ideally the roots want to be white and firm. You dont want to see brown slimey roots that fall apart easily as thats root rot. If worst comes to worst you can trim the roots back to create more space but try not to cut the main taproots, they are the thicker braid like ones.
