Tips on Breeding by DJ Short

I have loved Blueberry since the early 1990s. It is still my favorite. DJ Short made those varieties. I love him, in a generic, weed kinda way.

Most people are pollen chuckers*, not breeders.

*I think Jogro coined that term.

Same here Trousers, Blueberry is still to this day my favourite strain! The guy is a genius to me for creating and stabilising it for us :)

so when did dj short became a breeder? his first pollen chucking session.

I am a breeder, I do it for myself. I dont breed selectively yet but I am growing my own seeds now and I have a blast.

wiki said:
A breed is a specific group of domestic animals or plants with a homogeneous appearance, behavior, and other characteristics that distinguish it from other animals or plants of the same species, and arrived at through selective breeding. Despite the centrality of the idea of "breeds" to animal husbandry, there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term
As long as you use strains that appeal to you to start with, that is as far into selection you have to go to call yourself a breeder. IMO

NOW, there are professional breeders, hobbyists, wannabes, but they are all breeders and everybody is contributing to the diversity of cannabis.

hit the nail on the head there so to speak, me too. im a proud pollen chuckn motha fucka too! people make breeding harding than it seems but you absoluley right endurox, maybe the only difference is test more beans and search a little more when choosing what to breed with, but your still breeding and your still helping to further the diversty but not only that your making top notch genetics for yourself. thats what counts your collection is your collection and nobody can replicate

The difference i see between a full business breeder is the amount of plants they use to find the select traits they want to have in their strain. Pollen chuckers may be lucky and find a good mother and father that possess the traits they want but there is also a chance they will get the unwanted recessive traits also found in the same plant, hence why business breeders use so many plants to breed out the unwanted traits.

Im a pollen chucker too and am happy getting some beans for my own use. If they turn out ok i'm stoked with that :)

man cannabis is illegal and lots of breeders started their catalogue from 10 packs seeds years before they became famous. Odds are good for you if you know what you are starting with...

Solid genetics is solid genetics ... I have grown a few TGAs so far and I am very glad I used spacebomb for my male , ... and I had 2 seeds, a male and a female. It was meant to happen!!!

I didnt know what I was doing at all when I first did it back in August-September with another random male Agent Orange that I used on a random female Chemo (jordan of the island) and the Agent Chemo that are growing in my garden now are all stellar little plants, growing nice big buds and will yield average or above for 12/12 from seeds and they all smell a wonderful mix of the 2 strains... I am stoked!! By the way, the plants are a lot better than a lot of expensive seeds I bought and I found that I get better germination rate with my seeds... (when they are actually ready, not when I try to germinate them 1 week after harvesting them :eyesmoke:)

Buy Regular seeds and have even more fun with your hobby !! Also making it cheaper in the long run...

well selection is a..... bitch. but but like endurox is saying good stable genetics will yeild good stable genetics. i work with a little of both and my selection numbers are not that low, especially you include the ones i cull early. but i like to select from about 10-20 variations before i pick my solid choice for any single strain. right now my selection numbers are a tad on the low side with some strains, but i just have to grow more, i always keep clones of all the males bonzai style in 4x4 pots.

hey wait! i wanna chuck some pollen too! don't start without me!!!! already tossed an early C99 (oops!) an early C99 x A11 (oops again!) and want to use the joey weed unobtanium C99 x A11 again as it all got thawed along with my C99 pollen, but am planning to seal off malawi gold, haza x skunk & jack's cleaner 2 males next grow (if i get them) to knock the same up along with tart cherry buddha's sister indica, compact and crazy fast flowering "generic haze" sativa trans-love, sweet haze and hopefully some NL5 columbian too in my first controlled pollination attempt as well as my first SCROG

all that control freak "you aren't a breeder until you've stabilized a strain over 50 years" crap annoys me. fucking = breeding, pure and simple. quality of breeding? that's another issue, but if you start out with the best gear you can get, you'll get something as good with some free hybrid vigor in your f1s.

i was REALLY proud of my super cali haze x C99 gal i called fruity booty... very sticky and fruitier than C99, but didn't have the grape flavor i'd gotten out of both under halide when i used a sodium and was just fruity, but it was MINE! my baby! for me, growing is an act of love. i like just hanging out with my ladies and smelling that coochie. mmmmmmmmmmmm it wasn't as trippy or fruity as sweet haze, but if any of my sweet haze x cindy apollo beans are viable, fruity booty 2.0 should be even better and not just another generic haze.

pollen chuckers of the world unite!

i like chucking too because it's nature's way, and i truly believe it makes them preggers happier. i was also flattered when a connected dealer i knew saw my shit and commented on it being totally spider mite free and guessed it was grown from seed. organic from seed... the healthy alternative!

given enough time, any pollen chucker can work something nice and unique up, especially if given enough space to spread out and get serious. barring that, we do what we can with what we have and enjoy the process! it's another way to connect with your weed. growing it like cloned fucking cattle for profits is the real crime.

can i get a witness?!

we'll see. so far, viability is an issue with a premature first harvest with 10% or so viable C99 crosses and mostly that or lower with my second pollen chucking round where i had neighbor issues that made me switch to manual fan cycles until i forgot to turn it on one night and burned everything. my fruity booty gals were mostly viable though, but ruderalis isn't something i want to breed for.

i still think if you start off with quality genetics to start with, you'll get quality offspring and pheno obsession is more of a fine tuning thing. whatever hater issues are, those of us that breed at the amateur level out of our favorite and even not so much so ones are having fun getting our hands dirty and jumping into nature's system.

it's not about winning the cannabis cup (which is more about advertising dollars than true double blind testing) or impressing anyone but ourselves, and given enough generations and quality strains to knock up, we can invent strains to our own liking. every breeder's gotta start somewhere and breeding makes more sense than cloning to me, but i have issues with trying to take shorts with mother nature in general.

i can't speak for all the other chucks out there, but i do it for love of the gift. it makes me so happy, i wanna return the favor and get all them gals the hot bad boy dates they drip resin for. it's just part of the entire spiritual neo-rasta process. i've done a couple clones, but where's the fun in carbon copies unless you aim to share the genes? who knows what unexpected personalities we'll encounter on our journey, but when you start with the best you can find (ain't easy and fools try and block the path at every turn...) you'll create some fun stuff that no one else in the world has. (so you can hoard it like a miser! LOL)

if it weren't for pollen chucking and BAG SEED, there wouldn't be a neville's haze or fruity, spicy, tobacco tar and catpissy etc. phenos of haze. there were 4 phenos of mother's finest, and they were ALL good from the reports i read. actually, i was thinking a strain with wild pheno variations could be a FUN thing to do for a breeder. make a couple hybrids then breed them, then back cross them and let the diversity begin! it'd make trying to get consistent grow and smoke reports a pain, but imagine 4 or more keepers in a pack of seeds. i've seen way less pheno variation so far than differences in strains.

when it's something you've made yourself, it gets that home cooked placebo effect on the grower.
"fruity cutie? i knew ya when you weren't even a gleam in your momma's tricromes yet, and unlike dogs... you don't bark... oh wait! never mind!"

Totally agree man, i do it to cross my favourite strains and to get more beans for future use. If i get lucky and make a wicked cross, i'll be hell stoked! Im starting with good genetics so it should technically come out ok :)

for sure. my first pride and joy, fruity booty wasn't as trippy or delicious as sweet haze, but neither were it's parents, BUT it was clearly better than joey weed C99 and comparable to an average generic haze which textbook cindy ain't! if i can get something that nice out of decent parents the first time out, sweet haze x cindy apollo ought to be MUCH better with "75% more trippiness" and extra fruit flavor. it's be awesome if i could get a grape flavor out of any of those under halide like i did with super cali and to a lesser extent cindy, but i'm expecting a "fuck you! i'm proud of this shit!" cross with the two upgrades in round 2. some day, i want to get around to testing haze skunk x cindy and malawi x cindy apollo. those should be better than fruity booty too, but i'm still looking for "ultimate strains".

it's too bad you can just say the cross and get the bud instantly. *sigh*

i don't know about that. i just know what i like, and no one taking my hard earned money is giving me what i want. if $40 quarters of columbian gold were still around, i never would have studied and taken up growing, just as if i started smoking just 3-4 years later when indicas took over, i never would have blazed a second time. i REALLY miss the 80s! they don't instill the same kind of nostalgia as the 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s, but that was the last decade for real bud and music that had flavor and wasn't today's disposable bland shit you're only supposed to like enough to buy a CD you get bored with after 3 listens.

i have fond memories of getting high to both new wave and hip hop (when it was still party music and gangsta was the opposite of the vibe) and especially the trippy sounds of the art of noise. i'll never forget laughing my ass off the first time i heard "who's afraid (of the art of noise?)" o their second album i bought mostly unheard as soon as it came out. you have some good trippy herb and some sampled chick saying "can i say something?" and laughing a lot to a weird sounding beat and you just gotta laugh.

as always though, greed ruins EVERYTHING it touches! it ruined weed, it ruined music, and it's ruining the motherfucking planet! the 80s really were the good old days. fuck those 1990s yuppie fucks! LOL

if you have some nice psychoactive bud available to you, blaze it up really good and check this track out!

ahhhh those were the days you still heard weed coughs and bong bubbles in tunes like the original version of AoN's beat box. MTV hadn't imploded yet when i started blazing, and i used to trip out on videos before cleaning the restaurant i worked at every day scarfing vanilla ice cream and thinking to myself "the mice will play while the cat is away" all the while feeling like i was walking downhill with helium legs

the very first time i got high, this track freaked me the fuck out listening in between me speakers as headphones

i'd heard it a dozen times easily, but it was a freakout on columbian after 3D newscasters on TV LOL... fuckin' godzilla for real! it doesn't sound anywhere near as huge on digital and headphones as it did my 12" vinyl.

the very first time i got high i was trippin'! moreso than the 2 lame trips i had on acid even, though i DID have some real visuals on the pissweak 7 hits it took to give me my first "trip". i still say my cousin soaked them on me when i was planning on having 3-4 trips
