I consider tipping 20% of the gross a cost of business when i go out.
If the service was noticeably spotty, I will tip less, but on a scale that tends tpo err toward the generous. Like someone said: it's surprisingly hard work.

But when i get definitely poor or indifferent service (a server of any description is being paid to be almost ANYTHING but indifferent) here's an old trick i learned from Ann Landers:
I leave two pennies under a plate. That way the staff have no way to pretend i simply forgot. One penny could conceivably have been an oversight. but two sends the message every time. I've done that maybe twice in my life; I reserve it for exceptionally bad restaurant experiences based on service. If the food was awful, i acknowledge the server's work but will usually ask that an opinion be transmitted to the cook. cn

i normally tip good i just got into a fight the other day at a chinese buffet thou waiter wanted 17% just for getting drinks i told him to go fuck his self and gave him like 5 fuck all that

I tip 25% to 30% if the service is good. On only one occasion have I ever refused to tip. The waiter ignored our table for almost an hour. We finally had to get the manager involved. When he did serve us he poured our glasses so they would spill. He dumped an entire glass in my lap. He was smirking when he turned away. There were 6 of us at the table. They brought the check and the gratuity was included. I made the waiter take the check back and subtract the tip from the amount. Oh, he was pissed. The manager came out to fight with me and saw my wet pants and ended up giving me a free meal and told the waiter he didn't deserve a tip. I have never been back to that restaurant. ::cough::K.B. I hate waiters that do that kind of shit then expect a tip.

I like to always tip a minimum 14%, I add up to 35-40% depending on how friendly & attentive the server is to myself & my table...or if a good server is being shat upon by ignoramases for no good reason other than they can. I don't hold back for any food issues (unless I'm served something myself or my table hadn't ordered) because as another stated, they're the server not the cook/chef....they can't control that stuff, but they can be in control of making sure they bring the correct dishes to the correct table...it's ok if you confuse who got what if there's more than 2 of us-lol. I understand they have to share their tips & they usually make minimum wage or hover near it, so if you treat me great & do your job well I reward with tips, ignore my table/treat me rudely or with disregard or screw up orders you'll get just 2 bucks....1 for the server & 1 for your busser. If it's a buffet, it's a flat 14% in general unless I make any special requests then I'll bump it up. I loathe the resteraunts that automatically calculate a tip into my bill...it's my experience with the service I should reward as I see fit. I find that when the wait staff is good to you & you are good to them, when you come back they remember you & try to give you continuous stellar service each time. It is a rough job, no friggen way do I want to be a waitress...too many jerks would be gettin' knucklesamiches! :lol:

I think thats fair IF THE SERVICE IS GOOD. If the service sucks, eg: the server doesn't ask how everything is, or if I have to ask for refills on coffee or pop, then I'll tip a smaller amount. I don't like the idea of "auto grats".

What happens when to go to a buffet where you get the food and the server brings you the drinks??? Do you still give a 20% tip?

you failed to mention that the policy of the restaurant was clearly stated on the menu. like many restaurants they include a gratuity for parties of a certain size or bills over a certain amount. while i abhor this practice it's not like they just got pissy because someone didn't tip.

however, kidnapping the patrons because they didn't want to pay it because they felt like they got shitty service was over the line. a good manager would have apologized and tried to get the customer to want to come back and try it another time, possibly with a coupon or discount on the current meal.

i tip 15% for average service and 20% or more for great service. truly shitty service gets a sarcastic tip, usually coins.

keeping in mind that in my city, i am paying a sales tax, a prepared food tax, AND a municipal "meal tax" which adds up to 13% of the bill already, i am not eager to throw even more money at a shitty server.

buffet servers can kiss my ass. i can fill my own fountain drink.

That reminded me of what happened to my mom's coworker several years ago, she said her whole office went out to eat and the waitress spilled an entire pitcher of tea on the guy, they didn't even brig him any towels or anything and he was completely soaked. No discount on his food or even an apology.

She was a bitch and the service was terrible. I was nice tipping her much of anything.

20% straight across the board after taxes. Unless the service was incredibly bad. I never waited tables, but I can imagine how hard it is. It's probably worse than working retail.

I did that once and the waitress followed me out to the parking lot and threw them at me. :lol: Saying something about, 'Bitch I don't need your...'
