Hey guys! I found this thread about a year ago when I very first started to dip into hydro. I knew temps were going to be a problem and decided to use a cooler from day 1. Needless to say they work fantastic and Ive never had a temp problem. I just wanted to come back and thank you guys for this thread! Without it I wouldn't be the grower I am now....

1st crop. I threw a bag seed in the mix and it turned out to be an outdoor strain and went crazy.

Flo Grow very nice thread. I just finished reading it from start to finish. I've been growing for about 15 years, off and on, with mixed results. I started a DWC grow about 10 years ago, but had to tear it down mid grow due to being in a auto accident. The police kept coming by to interview me about the accident so fear took over and I shut down for a couple of years. I've been growing in soil the last 4 grows trying out organic. Very poor results, so I decided to try DWC again. I started researching the subject and came across your thread. I live in Arizona so temps are a major problem here. Right now it's about 113 degrees out side and about 80 deg. inside. When I started reading you DWC Club thread it gave me inspiration and a new excitement about growing. I would like to join your club if possible. I am going to start gathering the hardware to build the units. I growing in a 4'x4'x7' grow tent using a 400w MH for veg. and a 600w HPS for flowering. I have 320cfm inline fan pulling air thru Can carbon filter. Right now I have the air coming from the fan blowing thru the light hood and then to the outside. I'm going to change the light over to a blower and it's own line to the outside. I figure that will help with the temps inside the tent. They run at 80 to 85 deg. inside the tent now but I'm hoping it will reduce it some. I am also going to add a portable AC unit so I can keep the tent temps at the 75 deg. range. I know that with the info I got from your thread will keep me from having the res. temps go out of control. I am going to start simple with cooler air pumps lines and stones. I'm going to use two air pumps per cooler, I'm the over kill kind of guy. Also I've been toying with the idea of adding an extra air line and stone to put pure O2 thru the water, maybe run it for a min. or two every 4-6 hrs. Just an idea may not be practical, but your feed back would be welcome. As I get everything together I will post pics. But in the mean time I will watch this thread close and post when I have questions or comments.

Well i am a new DWCer and having a little issue with water temp. Because I'm just in to my second week and the plants and roots are doing fine. I don't like the water temp. I put some aquarium thermometers in each bucket and the water is running about 80. I am changing water tomorrow which. Will take care of it for a day. I started thinking about warping the buckets in insulation. So I started searching this forum and ran a couple searches and found this thread. I have read the first 10 pages and I have a while to go before I'm completely caught up. So far I like the ideas of the insulated gatoraid containers becoming the grow buckets except they are a little larde for my tent.

Well I wanted to introduce myself to the group and tell everybody that there are some really good ideas and insights to improve DWC growing. I am totally disabled with flat back syndrome due to a failed back surgery. I have been spending more time in bed, in pain watching the damn boob tube and my doctor gave me a medical marijuana so I started looking at what method to pursue that I can handle. I felt working out doors although would be nice but I can't bend over or get down om my hands and knees to take care of them. After reading everything I decided to go with DWC. IT takes time to setup and it took me just a bit longer because of my condition. Anyways got setup and got started. My only concern at the moment is the water is running at 80* which is what 15* to hot. So trying to find a reasonable solution led me to this fine group.

well I guess that is enough of a introduction, or more like to much but either way, hello all and will be around learning and writing if I have anything worth saying.

I have recently switched from 64 plant sog under 1200 watts to a two plant scrog both plants have there own 12 gallon coleman cooler. I run beenies so i got a 250 gph venturi pump. i tried it with air stones first but they clogged from the build up of benificials. so far it totally kicks ass.

Hey not DWC, I run an automated DTW table, but here is my cooler resevior if it count's. I fill it, put a 1/2 gallon ice jug in there, and it stays around 60 degrees for 4-5days. I have an air stone that runs 24/7 and a circulation pump that goes that goes on for 1 minutes every 45minutes. Currently I fill it with 20 gallons at a time and I water once a day for 4 minutes. This lasts me approximately 4-5 days.

Awesome thread, Flo! I just read it start to finish, as I'm going to be joining the club. I've grown with FF Ocean Forest, ProMix, & Perlite for several years, but am switching to RDWC with Igloo/Coleman coolers for my Rez. I'm not sure which is best, so any suggestions or advice is surely welcomed.

I would like to still use 5 gallon insulated buckets for my plant sites & go much bigger than 5 gal on the Rez cooler. I've heard having a bigger volume Rez than plant site volume will keep the water temps down ok, as long as the Rez is kept cold. The heat doesn't have enough time to affect the water in the buckets because of the volume of water being cooled in the Rez is so much more.

Just wanted to get all you club members advice if you were building a new setup today...

Thanks everyone! Could not do all I do without all the RIU members sharing their brilliance.

Great ideas with the water coolers! I've got to get a different set up for my res. Using a 5gal bucket sitting on the floor is hard as all hell to get the nutes changed. I was thinking maybe a table about two foot high to set my res (with ball valve for easy change) on to be able to swap easier.. Anyone have a set up like that? WATER TEMP ??: the bottles of ice in the actual res with roots doesn't cause any " burn"? To the roots??

Excuse the atrocious illustrations, recovering from broken metacarpals :(

I hate to revive a dead thread but seems to be the best one out there for DWC coolers. I was looking at using the Igloo quick and cool 100qt cooler for running two plants from start to finish. It has a garden hose connector on it which should make it easy to fill and empty. I was wondering what kind of pump people were using to empty/fill these coolers? Was looking to save the lid on this cooler by using some 1 - 2 inch thick styrofoam in its place, but cannot seem to find any locally. Any ideas on where to get that would be helpful as well? I could drill through the cooler lid but fear the net pots will be to far away from the water.

About time to kick the can down the road a little further... Did this last summer.. Two 5 gal. igloos, one to grow in, one as reservoir.... Hose clamps attach pvc tee fittings to the handles to support the scrog screen frame and reflective panels... The drip ring is plumbed to take water from the reservoir... That water is returned by gravity to the reservoir by a return line....... The drip ring does not pull water from the grow igloo...
Had to add 2 liter frozen water bottles , twice a day, to keep it under 70*f.. Ran a DS 200 led, 185 watt draw.. 2'x1.5' scrog screen...... clone, 27 day veg, 10.5 week flower, 6 oz yield..... 2 oz yield per sq foot of screen... Will pass on the mod that allows the water to circulate if anyone is interested...image_19754.jpg image_19755.jpg image_19757.jpg image_19762.jpg image_19771.jpg image_19776.jpg image_19846.jpg image_19871.jpg image_19981.jpg image_20001.jpg

Flo been gone for ages but igloos still fucking rock.

Im looking to get into DWC, but I have a few questions. If I just did a simple "nothing special" coolers. is it better to do standalone coolers like 5 gallon cooler per plant, or is it better to do larger long coolers with 2 plants per cooler? also, I have a concern. Everything says to change out the water and wash the reservoirs every week. Isn't that a huge pain in the ass? How do you remove the plants from the cooler without shocking them? How do you refill them with water without shocking them? is the water thats going in suppose to match in ph and nutrient ppm's? Is there any way to do this without a ppm meter? what is the max amount of plants that would be good for a single 600watt? I was thinking 4-6? sorry the questionnaire but its hard to find these answers.

You can do stand-alone 5gal coolers, but I prefer the larger coolers for more plants per cooler.
Go to Walmart for the 48q/12gal Igloo Marine coolers, or larger. Even Sam's Club for the REAL big ones like Bloomer57.
Preferably white coolers to refract the light.
Plus the Marine line of coolers were made to be on boats in the sun all day.
PERFECT for grow rooms under intense light !

No need to flush out the water and clean weekly as long as your res temp are cold enough (below 65F) and you replace the water/nutes that were eaten with fresh ppm's and ph'd solution every 1gal or more. Especially during bloom, which is when they eat/drink the most.
I would easily replace 1gal a day in a 12gal cooler with 10gal of nute solution.
I use Rez Doggs formula with powder Kool-Bloom, also here on RIU somewhere.

Again, no need to remove plants because no need to flush and clean until after the chop and harvest.
That includes males that show sex after bloom starts. Just cut the stalk and leave the root system in the cooler with the females the entire grow. I show proof of this is my threads too. NEVER AN ISSUE ! Just healthy roots on a plant that is no longer growing, along with the females that are left for bloom.

Look back a few pages at my cooler lid that has a corner cut off, to move for adding back nute solution to the cooler.
Simple and easy to use/do.
I use either 1gal or half gallon juice containers (like Ocean Spray, Gatorade, or Great Value[Walmart Brand]) to add back nute solution.
Be sure the solution you are replacing is the same ph and ppm as the cooler res for whatever stage of growing you are currently in.

I also use the half gallon bottles and fill about 90% with tap water and freeze them.
I keep one frozen bottle in each cooler, and switch them out at lights off and lights on, especially during bloom.
If your ambient air temps are 77F or lower, then the cooler res temps will stay below 65F.
Proper res temps will allow you better growing without worries of res bacteria, which hate cold temps so no root rot to worry about.
Stable and cold res temps also is what is needed to have stable ph readings.
TEMP AFFECTS PH !! WARM TEMPS = PH FLUCTUATIONS !
PH AFFECTS NUTES ABSORBED BY THE PLANT !
PH TOO HIGH = VERY LITTLE MACRO AND MICRO NUTES FROM BEING ABSORBED !!
I even posted info about that too a few years back.
Hydro grown buds like colder temps and lower ph than soil grown.
Best ph is 5.9 to 6.2 overall !! Hydro or soil !

You most def need a ph, ppm and temp meter. A combo meter of all 3 is even better and what I use.
I use a Milwaukee brand combo meter.

A 600w bulb is watt for watt THE best grow bulb. Good for a 4ft x 4ft area, versus 5ft x 5ft for a 1,000w bulb using more electricity for just an additional 1 - 3 plants.
For mature plants that are at least 3 feet tall, I never put more than 8 plants under a 600w Hortilux bulb. I also cut the bottom nodes that are more than 3 feet from the bulb. No popcorn buds taking up precious nutes since they get hardly any light. Waste of energy, nutes, and hurts the final yield !

Look up the Inverse Square Law. I even made a post about on RIU if you can find it. VERY USEFUL for not wasting light and grow space.

I stopped growing, but try to drop in once in a long while and offer any consultation if need be.
Hope this helps !

I have been using a 20 gal Tote from WallyWorld for my first DWC grow, which has been an awesome experience. My res temps have been a constant 80 deg F
from the start, even after adding a IceProbe chiller. I ascertained that the chiller can't get ahead of the temps because of the heat gain from the 600W HID. The res temps stay the same as the room temp with no ill-effects, but that's not good enough. I have been using HydroGuard, and have had zero problems with the res. After running across this thread, I ordered a 48 quart Thermos cooler to use starting the next grow. I will limit the holes in the top to 3. When I do auto's, 3 will be plenty, and photoperiods will only need 2. I'm betting the IceProbe can get the res temps down to ~70ish or better, and maintain that temp. I'll start a grow journal next time and document the grow.

I'm starting a 2 igloo grow and will be using this 10 gal ice chest as a reservoir... Two GH pumping column driprings will move about 5 gals an hour each.. I'm betting the farm that the Ice Probe can cool this 10 gal reservoir enough to keep up with the exchange rate... The igloos will support there own 3'x3' s screens and 3'x3' reflective panels..IMG_0203.JPGIMG_0202.JPGIMG_0204.JPGIMG_0206.JPGIMG_0208.JPG
