yeah he used a poor choice of words saying democrats. He should have said democrats that serve in congress the senate and the whitehouse. The rest however are not thrilled, their pockets are not being lined.

so if there were no regulation, sort of like what happened to California with it's electricity dereg - then there would be no corruption? How about an explaination of how this works.
Regulatory organizations like the EPA and FDA are what give Monsanto power.

most of the "information" contained in that screed was completely unscientific nonsense, and deliberately misleading. in fact most of the arguments against genetic modification is based in lies deception and bullshit.

When you eat a food you do not absorb the genetic material of the creature you eat. eating beef does not turn you into a cow, cows who eat alfalfa do not turn into alfalfa.

Most farmers BUY their seeds, not grain from last year. planting seeds from last year reduces the effectiveness of carefully bred modern cultivars. even pot growers BUY their seeds when possible. selective breeding gives the stable and desirable traits we seek,, random genetics from other (or even the same) strains will rarely be as useful as plants of a well tended seed stock.

The Organic label is all hype. most "Organic" food you see is grown in unknown conditions by dipshits with a label maker that features an "O" key. a nice supply of "Organic" produce comes from China. think about that.

Selective Breeding IS genetic modification, only slower. changing an organism's genetics in a lab or in a greenhouse results in the same thing, but science does it faster, and without the rolling of genetic dice.

Anti-GMO activists dont care about people! activists convinced the leaders of starving african nations that GMO food was being sent to their country because it is poison. POISON! thats criminal! those douches play on the fears of the ignorant (in africa AND the developed world) with lies deceptions and propaganda.

the only valid concern about GM organisms is their effect on the delicate balance of the natural world, but nature does it's own genetic modifications all the time. making a plant resistant to roundup is hardly a natural advantage unless the plant is exposed to roundup. the use of herbicides in agriculture is a problem of industrial agribusiness, not real farmers. we got better ways to control weeds than defoliants. that shit is just lazy.

I just think it's funny Bucky is "green" and MMGW is like a nuclear bomb, but GMOs are pink fuzzy communist bunnies spreading the seeds of life to the whole world! Seriously, wtf?
i was just answering a question, actually.

i have opinions on GMOs, but they are not particularly negative or positive yet.

I think you're a bit off on a few things here...

Yes you're right eating food doesn't cause you to magically absorb DNA and thus have it replace your DNA or change it.

Planting seeds from a previous crop doesn't mean they're less effective, they can be, but it depends on several factors. Large seed producers plant their own seeds from the previous year, to generate more seeds for the next year. And most of the farmers around where I live save their own seeds to save money because Farmers tend to get the shit end of the stick unless they're giant faceless agribusiness.

The Organic label is not hype. Words like "Natural" are hype because they have no definition legally or otherwise. If I'm going to buy organic I buy only USDA certified which requires the farm go under a certification process and usually look for a state-level certification which my State has and enforces hard. Just because some places are loosely regulated and some people are unscrupulous doesn't mean everyone is.

Selective breeding: Science does it faster! That doesn't mean better, and the fact that nature HASN'T done it yet doesn't mean science made a better decision. Not to sound like a hippie but that's just human arrogance.

Anti-GMO activists: Some don't care about people. This is true, I know these people, there are plenty of them. But there are thousands of people who are concerned about what their families are eating more so than what happens in Africa. In all honestly I don't have a problem with GMO products on the market, as long as they don't contaminate other choices and are labeled so people can make a decision. Which is exactly what Monsanto is trying to prevent from happening. GMO crops aren't poison, but they aren't 100% on the level either, not enough testing has been done and they are being pushed through the door too fast without really knowing how they effect people especially long term. For example the genetically engineered BT Brinjal Eggplant introduced in India was actually found to be toxic and unfit for human consumption.
