The Big Aloe Emerges From The Basement

I couldn't get it through the doorway without bending it up a little. I've had this aloe plant for like 10 years now, my brother bought it and stuck it in the ground one year and it got huge. Then he dug it up and threw it in this pot and took it in for the winter, then I ended up with it somehow.

It's has been living in about 6 inches of soil for its entire life in the pot (I assume what my brother dug up out of his yard.) I leave it outside when it's warm enough but it spends all winter in a corner in the basement with hardly any light at all. I've never given it any fertilizer, nutes or anything like that. I'm going to show it some love this year and give it a transplant and give the 4 good sized pups their own containers. Talk about a plant that has thrived on neglect though, it has barely been watered all winter. I'll probably leave it in the garage for awhile or the sunlight is going to damage it.

I transplanted this from a gallon pot last spring into gardner and bloome cactus mix and some happy frog 80/20 and it turned into this in under a year.

Oh and I despise that maple tree dropping all that shit everywhere. Maple trees seem to be the bane of gardeners everywhere.

Awesome man, maybe I'll have to transplant it into some happy frog, I've never seen mine flower!

here's mine with a Jade plant and Japenese Mustard below.....It would be bigger, but I always pick filets for watering..:peace:
I don't think your variety gets as large as the ones mwooten and I have, I've had similar aloe plants before and they stayed fairly small but I could very well be wrong.

Those might be the biggest jade leaves I've ever seen. I have a small Jade plant that was like a little bonsai for years and then I put it outside all summer last year, neglected it, and it grew these long branches curling around and most of the leaves had turned purple. I started giving it some very light nutrients and spraying it with some epsom salts a few times this winter and it has been greening back up but I still have the strange looking branching and it lost its bonsai look..

Jade plant might be the toughest plant I have come across....this is about 3 years old now...It started as a single leaf and stem, thrown in a glass of water. It did root pretty quickly, but I didn't have much appreciation at the time [dumb] and left it in the glass for months....The roots dried out at points and also started to rot....but I kept giving it clean water after a while and then finally transplanted it and it a survivor that's for sure..I really hadn't looked at it for while until this picture and it seems to be doing well.....The Mother is the huge monstrosity in a 20 gallon pot from a family member...It is at least 35 years old...lol...

I really want to study up on these guys too, they are used medicinally in their range...in fact, the little info I could find, talked about when people received nasty burns or had a terrible infections, they would cut open the jade leaves and press them against the affected area and wrap in a badge for a week....supposed to be the best way to heal burns without scarring?
[So I have been asking myself, why don't I use it like aloe?....maybe when it gets a little bigger :)...]

Interesting about the different types of aloe.....I have a couple other's that are tad bigger and these are all bout 18 months old....I hope my gardening isn't sucky.....they plump up quite well though !

Interesting, I've never heard that you could use jade like that. A friend of mine has a monster jade plant and some huge San Pedro cacti he grew from cuttings he stuck in pots of miracle gro uggh... but it works well for him I'll give him that, they've grown like crazy and are huge. Your Aloe and jade plants look nice and green, I've got a tray of succulents I neglect, I'd be embarrassed to show them!

Its all that rotted Stinging Nettle juice I use! .....thats my only ingredient.....I need to take pics of my ferment "tanks" and show you the different types of water traps I use to keep Oxygen out....lets the Co2 and other gases blow off, but doesn't let oxygen back in!....you could also just use a piece of 1/4" or bigger clear tubing and bend it in the shape of an "S" and then place a tiny bit of water in one of the swoops.....:peace:
