100% hotplate. how was that missed until almost the 3rd page haha?
What about butane made you think an electric device would be a good idea? That hot plates wiring/heating element is exposed to the environment....not sealed in a vacuum. You are lucky to still have your vision.....super bad decision. Why even attempt one? Butane boils at such a low temp. Iso I can understand but butane? Wow
 
It would have been safer inside with no hot plate.

Edit: Not saying thats safe either. Just think about it.... Electrical device all mixed in a cloud of butane.... just asking to ignite. SWIM needs to read more and think before trying anything further.

Not sure about other places, but having written process and equipment verbiage for a couple of WA state applicants, I can affirm that they have closed loop written into their new regulations, and one built by a commercial manufacturer, meeting all applicable regulations. They must be closed loop and not out of someone's back yard.

I believe I had mentioned this when it first published but didn't provide links sry guys they are cracking down on home lab and people working in non commercial spaces. if it is not made for and marketed as a extractor for MJ then it has to go through a testing process o some kind.

Ill be honest I don't know much about the process of making BHO, but is there a non flammable substitute to butane that would produce the same effects? I have heard of CO2 Extraction, but not much information is available on the subject. After smoking it for the first time a month or so back I would like to try and make my own BHO, but no way in hell if I am going to play with a bomb...

I have always considered static to be a real safety issue. Precautions must be taken to prevent a discharge and cause a explosion. Touch a grounded metal plate, stand on a rubber mat, wear rubber gloves, etc. Having said this it seems obvious that any electrical device would be a major safety issue. Remove all electronics from a 50ft radius.

Blast tane through column and collect in pyrex dish and let liquid tane evaporate,THEN put on hot plate.

This is a great thread to read! I think it helps us all take a second and step back and make sure our safety steps are in order. Also reminds us to do the research and use our common sense to prevent this from happening.

No heat slow butane evaporation gives a better end product also; as well as being the safest way.

If you're going to do it in a garage or shop or something like that make sure every door is open and set up a couple fans if you have to to bring fresh air in to displace the butane vapor with oxygen so there is no chance (or a much lower chance) of this kind of thing happening.

Should keep in mind also that if you have things like deep freezers, furnaces, heaters, etc that cycle off an on their own by things like thermostats there is always a chance that a spark will occur when that piece of equipment cycles on and draws power from your house electricity. If the butane vapor displaces the oxygen it will almost certainly combust.

I would not underestimate the expansion of butane into a gas. Reducing concentration with fans in a enclosed space below ignition point of "1.86 to 8.41 percent butane to atmospheric air content" is probably much harder than you are giving credit for. The expansion ration is around 233:1. If my math is right that means one can of 300mL butane will release 300cm^2*233*1M^2/10000 cm^2=6.99 m^2 One can is roughly 7 square meters or around 75 ft^2. In a 10x10 room it would be filled with 75% butane. Or without any math just imagine the space of one can of liquid butane and imagine 233 of those cans and the space it would take when it is in a gaseous state.
Simply put, do not ever under any circumstance do butane extractions in any enclosed space.

Hey Daub no doubt man I agree with you do not do butane extractions in any enclosed spaces!!

BUT I think you may either be mistaking how the displacement math is interpreted or formulated. I'm not saying that from a scientific basis but just from observations of my own..

I have friends that blast their extracts in a large shop with all the doors open and they smoke weed steady in there with no explosions or fires. I AM NOT SAYING THATS GOOD TO DO!! So the oxygen must displace the butane with not too much of a an issue with that much fresh air. They don't use fans at all either. I thought they were fucked for doing so but they've been doing it like that now for a month or so.

Myself I never light any open flames or plug anything in around the extraction until the tane has evaporated and the air has been totally cleared and I extract in a very open shop right next to the door just to stay out of the rain. I used to warm purge the tane on a griddle but I don't even do that anymore. I just let it evaporate naturally. Then add warm heat after evaporation.
