So what is the universe, how does it perform it's many functions? Is it like a computer calculating and organizing every event or is it more like a chemical reaction where everything just finds its place?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.

I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Time to die.

Its so many things you don't have nearly enough life span to begin to understand it.

That question touches so many different realms that are unknown it staggers the imagination (which is why I like Roger's quote so much) and the allegories you provide all rely on external actors.
If it were like a computer (digital), who built the computer?
If it were like a chemical reaction, what physical action caused the chemicals to combine?
Biological might be a better tack as it's a weird mix of the 2 above and is the entire reason we're here to question its existence.

Big bang never made sense since if everything came from an initial explosion as white hot "debris", where did anything biological come from as (at least from our present understanding) nothing biological can survive on molten rock.
Water is another good one that doesn't do molten well.

Ride the dragon toward the crimson eye
Flap the wings under Mars red sky
The reptile pushes itself out into space
Leaving behind, the human race

Swim inside the solar seas
The Nebula cries out to me
Passing where I've gone before
I fly through the crimson door

Ride the dragon toward the crimson eye
Flap the wings under Mars red sky

the universe is your body. you leave it where you die
You return to the womb after you die. Until you fulfill the lessons of your soul, after which you will ascend this cycle of Death and Rebirth. Your body is not the Universe, your body is a container for your soul. Your soul is a facet of God. The Universe is God.
