Super Spreaders - Do they work on all hoods?

I have a super spreader and would only use it on the manufacturers own product , Adjust A Wing as it helps spread the light back behind the unit if installed correctly and offers a wider spread then without ...... Yeah they are suppose to spread heat but in reality they hold heat and are worthless in my humble opinion .. Why obstruct a perfectly fine working bulb in the first place ...

My spreader came with my Adjust A wing and even this product I dont recommend unless you want the look or need an open hood running a metal halide to enhance trichome production by adding UVB , otherwise your wasting time with these stupid hoods and products .. PotSnob

Yeah I do run a 1000w Metal Halide.
I may get a dual-arc; still thinking on that and can't afford now anyway.
I need to go more research before I jump on a different bulb.

I should have made that clearer as a MH does run a lot hotter than HPS typicaly do.

Both MH and HPS run at the same temperature, don't believe the bullshit you read on these forums.

right on Huel!!!!! i have the spreaders sitting on a shelf!!!! waste of money inho... the metal holds heat and also makes a shadow behind from the mount bar... light movers work way better to spread light and heat just dont run ur hoods to far apart as to let the end plants get out of the light..... i think i have a few left as i gave them away ...

I use BT-37 style bulb which is smaller than the regular MH; but still pretty good size.
I never thought of the Super Spreader not fitting.

See that's why it would be cool to be rich.
Just go buy shit and if it don't work hold lots of garage sales.

Are dual-arc about the same operating temp as well?


I though MH was hotter because bulb is wider diameter and closer to glass?
For years i've read people on these forums said "my HPS makes my room hotter than my MH" and "my MH bulb produces way more heat than my HPS"...

In my experience i never noticed a difference but i wanted to know for sure who was right and who was full of shit. I only use Eye Hortilux bulbs because i believe they are the best so i decided to email them to ask them which bulb gave off more heat. This is a quote of their response...

1000W HORTILUX™ Bulb temperaturesSuper HPS = 752° F
HORTILUX BLUE = 878° F
Standard Metal Halide = 752° F
e-Start Metal Halide = 806° F
I know other manufacturers bulbs may be slightly different but this shows that a basic HPS and MH bulb run at the same temps.

I never gave into that belief as well , always going to run 60 Hps/40 Halide regardless of bulb temps .. I like a fuller spectrum in the end ........ Thanks for sharin there reply.PotSnob

anyone know how high my lights should be for flowering? 1000W without the glass(took it down), also without a light spreader. is it safe to lower my light to the optimal level(whatever that may be) without having the light spreader and without the glass? need help asap..... do i gotta go get a light spreader?

Without a sealed air cooled reflector you're not going to be about to get the bulb very close to your plants at all. Why did you take the glass out?

Question: Using a bigger hood with the same bulb will it run cooler directly under the lamp?
Even without the 'heat' spreader?

Here is a pic showing size comparison between old and new hood:

I'm running behind on my rebuild because I had to move plumbing and decided to upgrade entire room while I'm at it.
So I probably won't have it installed in room for a week or more yet.

Maybe I don't even need the spreader.
I'm just wanting to keep it as cool in there without running ac 12 hours a day as I can.

this is my first time. and i thought taking the glass out would make it brighter and i guess hotter during veg stage. thought it was good during veg stage. isnt it? so yea... now in flowering but really dont know what to do. its 1000 watts and i heard that 1000 watt lights should be kept 2 feet high at least. but i remember reading about putting lights lower during flowering. so what should i do now?

almost forgot. i read that the light blocks UVB rays. and that is essential for flowering. so... wont the glass be bad for the plants?

You want your room as close to 75 degrees as possible and you want your plants as close to the light as possible without exposing them to too much heat, its as simple as that. Putting the glass in isn't going to block the plants from anything except detrimental heat...

dont really know how to deal with the temp right now. its pretty cold now but the temp inside the room is still around 80F. and as for the UV-b blocking from the glass, i guess you can call me gullible, but i read an article and believed the guy when he said those glasses block UV-B. heres the link .. http://www.cannabisculture.com/node/10584

I wouldn't be concerned with UV-B on your first grow, instead you should focus on lighting, temperature, air flow, water and NPK.
 
Hanging a temp/humidity gauge at the top of the canopy or making it mobile so that you can raise it as the canopy grows helps a lot. You should lower your light as much as possible, just make sure the temp near the tops of the plants never exceeds 85 degrees F. 75 degrees F is the goal though

Well I have been running it all for almost a month now and just finished the new hood fan yesterday. I am now pulling as Huel suggested and he is absolutely correct! I did drop about two degrees on that simple change alone. I'm running about 81* F with my sidelight temp controller set to 82* to turn them off if/when temp reaches that threshold until it cools back down a degree and a half. The super spreaded does reduce light directly underneath the lamp a bit; but it does spread the light outward wonderfully. In my 4 x 5 room the light is about 3" down from side of hood on the farthest wall. Really good coverage. I bought my blower from Behler-Young H&C supply house. It's a FanTech FG4-XL and is guaranteed to run constant for 5 years. It's only 171 cfm; but it is more than up to the task of cooling my 1000W hood setup. I used neoprene pipe insulation with bungee cords inside them for vibration free fan hangers. A couple eyehooks to the rafters and a few well placed pieces of foam holds it securely and quietly; the only noise I hear is air rushing through the vent pipes. I guess next I will cover it all with unfaced fiberwool to dampen the noise. You just proved yourslf wrong with your own proof. Smh.

Hortilux Mh runs 136 degrees hotter than Hortilux HPS, and thats from what you posted.

Thats a big difference in temperature, its pretty obvious that Eye Hortilux MH is hotter.

Good job shitferbrains... You bring back a nearly 3 year old dead thread to prove you can't read... Both MH and HPS run at 752 degrees (from my post above).
