stickybuds Defoliation technique

Have you done any true side-by-side comparisons between defoliated and non-defoliated specifically using clones to reduce variables?

That's the problem I have with all this defoliating debate, no-one seems to do such a comparison, and it always ends up someone "feeling" they get more yield.

If you click on my signature link to my grows you'll find out that I'm not one to mess with the leaves and am pretty happy with the results....only because I have not been swayed to try defoliating. Yes, I've seen some nice grows defoliating, and then I've seen more grows ending up looking like a bud-on-a-stick with very little yield. I suspect a successful defoliated plant takes a ton of trial and error and much experience. If someone can show me the "right way" of defoliating with a side-by-side comparison, I may be swayed.

I don't think defoliated a plant increases yield (removing all fan leaves at different times in veg/flower) but instead, working out what leaves the plants needs and the ones that are not needed and this does take a ton of trial and error and much experience also removing stretched week shoots as there like suckers you get on a tomato plant, they need to be removed so the fruit/buds grow bigger

my biggest problem is, its not a simple thing to explain and if you get too much wrong you will grow bud-on-a-stick with very little yield, took me years to learn.
even if I did a side my side test and everyone said great it works, what did you do again, every plant has to be treated different, last thing I want is a forum like UB with loads of growers chopping there fan leaves off

if you want to try it, pick a plant or two, remove a few old fan leaves and see how it goes, over time you will pick it up just like I did

Well said Sticky, as you have stated not all plants take to it and overdoing it can do more harm than good...

Spider mites have got my garden all f-ed up bro, I removed all the big fans on my mommies to aid in killin the little bastards off. Not as much greenery for them to hide in and I still have about 2 months to go before I'm going to flower anything so the girls have plenty of time to recover. It did slow them down a lot, but that's ok because they were quickly outgrowing the space I have available. Lot's of new growth coming at all the node sites though so I'm sure I'll have plenty of clones to choose from when the time comes

bad news about the Spider mites, at leased you removed the fan leaves as it slowed them down, hope you get it sorted soon Jointed

I'm pretty sure I got rid of em, because I lowered the temps down to the mid 60's to stop the breeding while I treated them. I check them often and haven't seen any sign of eggs or crawlers so hopefully all will be back to normal soon.

update 20 days 12/12

things are going ok but the timer for my lights broke so the light been on straight for 48 hours, sorted now but don't know if its going to affect the plants or not
they been drinking 15ltrs every 2 days,

its all about experimenting.. with what has worked for others.. topping is a great tool. LST is also just as effective.. and doesnt cause as much stress.. looks fucking great tho. good job.. hope to see more..

cheers rocko369, if your going to give it a go, just remove a few fan leaves and see how the plant reacts
good advice joitOperation, both lst and topping a plant can give you a higher yield with less plants, thats what I used to do

lights on for 48hours has affected the plants and the heat has damaged my leaves on some of the plants, but there not looking bad for 4 weeks in flower
