Spider mites, White Fly & Alcohol

Whats up burger boss. I use the 70% cut 50/50 with tapwater and it works great. Just dont saturate the soil. And you dont half to get wild with it. They die on contact. Check it out thru a micro scope if you can.
And by the way Aces, glad to hear your spider mite problem is under control, but I see you have a "spider dog"
LOL, good luck with that......BB

In my first mite outbreak (similar to yours) I read all over the net the alcohol solution.

I mixed 4:1 a 70% alcohol and it slowed them down but that was it. I am guessing that 4:1 and 70% = 175/1000 or 17.5% solution is too weak.

I ended up moving onto doktor doom which works better.

That may help a bit.

A 17.5% solution would do just that! Slow them down, maybe kill a few. I've used a 35% mix on 3 different infestations & it worked every time with no ill effects on the girls, (on 2 treatments, there was VERY slight leaf curling that disappeared within hours). BTW, the reason the problem reoccurs is that my grow is a patio/greenhouse with exposure to outside. My damn neighbors are growing squash & tomatoes that have turned into a white fly "buffet".

So, for as long as this incredibly cheap & effective treatment works, and no problems for my "big honey's", I think this is the best way for me to go. I would still like to hear from other folks, pro & con on this subject.

Good luck & good grow to ALL.........BB

Hey Burger Boss,

Nice thread you started here as I will continue it for you.

I just recently found some spider mites that were crawling underneath my fan leaves (boy was I pissed). I even had them at an earlier stage (babies) and this method worked flawlessly. I buy the 99% alcohol and cut it with water (1:1 ratio) and spray my girls with it. I spray top to bottom and most importantly, underneath where they like to chill during day time. Like someone mention, dont get it into the soil. The girls dont like to be posioned. I make sure that the alcohol evaporates before I put them back into my tent or else the maginify glass effect will burn them.

Pro: works like a pro and kills on contact. cheap and effective. not deadly for your girls. evaporate quickly

Cons: I hate the smell of it (smells like the doctors place). some spider mites are immune to this procedure.

PS - I collected a few of them f@*^ers and watch them as I spray killer instinct spray, and let me tell you how fun it is to watch them try to run and curl up and die as the liquid touches them. muwahahahahahahahah!
sorry I just had too:bigjoint:

Well we seem to be gathering a consensus that the Al/H2O works.
However, we're a little vague on the strength. A 48% mix seems a little strong, but if your girls can handle it, "git er done". I personally will continue with a mix that is only 35% alcohol as it has worked so well for me & I'm a little concerned
about the long term effect the alcohol may have on the plants.
I hope someone with real expertise will pickup on this thread and give us some science on the effects of alcohol on plants.
Good luck & good grow to all.....BB

Great tone to the thread, lotta respect.

Just tryed 50% mixed 50% with water. I will drop in after a few days with a report.

Thanks all

I've tried the rubbing alcohol 99% and mixed it 50-50 with water and had pretty good sucess on killing the live mites, but it didnt seem to work well on the eggs, I now use C02 and dont have a single bug at all in my room., I also read if you bring your C02 level up to 10,000 ppm for 15 minutes, it will kill all eggs and mites, just make sure to air out your room before re-entering.

Go with the Pyrethrum TR! You will be wasting your money with the doctor doom. I have bombed and bombed and it is garbage. Also after you use the pyrethrum give it A couple of day's and then use some bio neem... I am gonna give the alchol A try and see how well it does.

I have the same amount of plants but i only seen 3 plants infested i found them yesterday and i dint know what to do! so i went to my local nursery and got my self 100 LADYBUGS! placed them in my room and i sprayed the 3 plants the one's that i can see that had spider mite webs out of 30 of them! i sprayed them with Foxfarm Dont bug me spray!
I hope this doesnt hurt my plants what do you think about

1 Ladybugs for spidermites?
2 Fox Farm Dont bug me (spray)?

I will try the soap method should i wait for your methods since i did all this already (Ladybugs and spray Today!)
or do it right away?

Please help here are some pictures to see if this heavy or normal infestation! I cant belive i dint see them earlier?[/QUOTEcan`t really help mate but thanks for the picks.having problems with mine and wasn`t sure what they were, but lookin at yours it`s defo isn`t spider mite. think i`m suffering with white fly and thrips i think(just had a look on net and it looks like them). some guy mentioned about leaving a jug of water out and the mosture attracted the mites and he went in to his room the next day to see thousands of them dead in it. could`nt really make sence of it but i tryed it. NOTHING! there was nothing there. i was filling up my water tank and there they was. thousands of them floating at top of the water some alive some dead. off to shop tomorrow to get something you can put in the water to kill em
