I noticed there is a private section...
is there anyway to limit new members to a "newbies" section for like the 1st 30 days/100 post...
I realize this won't eliminate spam, but at least it will make them change tactics and allow you mods one place to look/clean it up...

perhaps announce to all that newbie questions will remain as is

...again, not sure how easy it is to do, or fleshed out how practicle...but the situation right now is pretty bad

I agree...the site seems like it is getting hit every night...Personally I wish the govt could some how make stiff penalties for spammers, and really hang the scumbags by their balls

Some members enjoy more privileges for their patience, support, and devotion. But, I promise, there are plenty of RIU spam-snipers, and troll-beaters out there. If you think someone's post is shit, you are welcome to present your case to the moderators. Just be sincere. The last thing the mods need is someone booing for no reason...

Most people on this site get all caught up just getting the extra money for a lightbulb or something for a growing medium and the pump and timer will have to wait 'til next month. They probably lost more money than they made spamming the site. The internet is loaded with sex sites. My junk email is full of sex and the promise of lots of money if i submit my name, address and all my personal data. I have countless sex sites blocked in my hotmail but the flood of sex and free money still floods my junk email. It leaves me womdering what the world is all about. Is the majority of people nothing but perverts. I come on RIU to escape the perversion. I quit looking at porn at about age 15, when I discovered that the real thing is...well what can you do with pictures.

Anyway...I don't "think" it's a good idea to do business with shady people who can't afford advertising. You'll most likely get burned somehow.

im not sure i completely understand, perhaps you dont know how it works so ill break it down for you
we have more mods in newbie and gmg than anywhere else on the board
we ip ban spammers,
we catch more spam than what gets on the board, ie we delete HUNDREDS of spam that gets caught and that is not seen by users
however spam will somehow always get on the board by bypassing spamfilter, they usually hit when most mods are offline, ie 4-7am
people report we remove as soon as possible.
all mods are volunteers
and lastly, when youre a big site like this you get spam, spam is computer generated and hits big websites. its the internet its pretty much unaviodable

the private section i assume youre talking about the elite section which we dont have anymore

no we wont limit new members to their own section, i believe that request has been declined many times

maybe try soaking your computer in r/o water after cutting off the powercord.

yeah I kinda struggled a lil over even posting this...hell; last thing you wanna do is sound like a complainer on a FREE website run by volunteers...trust me, I get this and absolutely appreciate all the work...

I was just thinking out load about how irritating these a-holes spammers are, and how its ruining the site and offering a possible solution...not that this idea was original or whatever...

no i get it, but they will always get through somehow some way best we can do it keep deleting banning them :D

Power cords on computers don't have to be cut off...they have plugin's. Chuck, it is now obvious that you not only do not grow weed but you are also computer illiterate. Do you even own your own computer. Do you pay for your own internet? Obviously not.
