48-year-old needed surgery after being injured during arrest, investigators say

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation after investigators say a man was injured during a police traffic stop and required surgery near Kenora, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say they made a traffic stop Thursday at around 12 p.m. on Highway 71.

A canine officer approached a vehicle 2 kilometres north of Sioux Narrows–Nestor Falls, Ont., which is located 76 kilometres southeast of Kenora.

The officer began speaking with the male driver when he noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to police.

The officer then attempted to arrest the 48-year-old man, who sustained injuries to his neck and shoulder during the course of the arrest, the SIU said in a statement.

The man was transported to hospital and underwent surgery, according to the SIU.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have witnessed this event to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates cases where someone is seriously injured or killed in a confrontation involving police.
