Can't stand being begged for extra money or having it tacked on at a nice ocean side resteraunt.....I am a super fair willing to tip kinda guy ....but when it's expected of me or I'm begged for it ...it kinda ruins the point of a kind gesture in the first place .......and tips for me go by the service I receive or how drunk I am ..............I seen a sign once that said tipping---not a city in china ......that made me laugh so I tipped ............

Why the hell would you abolish tips???? Don't give one if you don't want.
Not a big fan of a jar like that but I don't know the situation. But a lot of people squeak by because of tips because of bullshit laws that allow people to be paid less than min wage if they work in a service position that MAY get tips. And of course they are expected to REPORT their tips as well, so taxes can be collected. So they are trapped in a system.
So if we eliminate ALL laws like this, then we can begin to have a discussion about whether tipping should be allowed or not.

We dont have mandatory tipping in the UK thank fuck
It's not mandatory here either, that's a big part of the problem inherent in the system. A waiter could give the best service and might still receive no tip, it's definitely looked down upon, but nobody is going to jail over not leaving a tip for good service

I feel like tipping in America is just another way to shift the burden of another cost off onto the customer by subtly shaming people into it. If you don't tip, you're "cheap", that alone is enough to get 99% of people to leave a tip

Why do we allow some "jobs" to be exempt from minimum wage?

@ padwan,

All your thinking seems top down. It is about forcing employers and citizens to do what you think is right or want. That isnt freedom, it is tyranny.

Mabye if you thought from the bottom up you would be a happier person. Instead of forcing someone to do what you want why dont you encourage people who are doing what you want.

In this case, go someplace that doesnt have a tipping cup. By doing that you encourage what you want without infringing upon everyone elses choices in life.

Employers should be forced to pay their employees a living wage. That's not just what I think is right, that's what's objectively right. If you disagree with that, I'd love to hear you your argument that reasons why you believe taxpayers should make up that difference through social safety net programs instead of employers

You are basically saying that you are required to treat any employees as family.

Taxpayers are not making up any difference, taxpayers pay all salaries to employees, taxpayers pay for everything, it is where all the money comes from.

It is not the governments place to make sure everyone is taken care of and everything is fair. That is the problem first and foremost.

Again, why are you so against freedom and in favor of tyranny?
