lollypopping should be the plan from the beginning if going that route. The idea is to pack a lot of plants very close together and to cut the underbrush on switch to 12/12 and again 1 week in. In other words, lollypopping is a technique that works well with a SOG and short veg times.

If it's done at the stage you did it, it's because you vegged for too long in general (which you already know). The issue there is that you waste time and energy growing branches that will simply be chopped and discarded (not enough demand for clones usually)

With this experience, it should be a lot easier to canopy plan for your next grow with a much better plan for when to switch to 12/12. (based on number of plants, weeks required to flower, etc)

In general, you won't find a consensus on how many plants and how much veg time, even from experienced growers.

Some prefer a shit ton of little lollipops with 0 veg time, while on the other extreme, some experts insist that 1 plant with a long veg time is best. There's a lot of in between thinking.

The thing both camps have in common is that the canopy must be filled out when the stretch is done and the buds are filling out. A dense and even canopy is what gets optimal yields, at least indoors.
