Shotgun Seedlings & Mother Selection, Plus anyone tried these cuts? HIGH RES PICS

What up all,

Haven't been around at all lately, work is stupid busy right now.

Anyway, I have(had) an abundance of breeder packs, and now a shitload of homegrown S1s. So I decided to shotgun the breeder packs and pick a few moms and flip the rest at like 2 weeks post germ, been wanting to try growing a bunch of mini cola's lol. Also testing the viability and quality of some of the S1's. Massive Pic Spam Below(Click for full rez "zoomable")...

Anyway, I'm not 100% sure in what to look for in a mother, don't know much more than look for healthy one. I have space and lights to keep 4 of them. And considering I'm choosing before they are sexually mature, I'm guessing I should limit my self to the fem seeds. lol. Guess I'm looking for some fresh input on all this.

And I could do with some input on what's wrong with some of these. Leaf damage and "rust" spots on some of em.

Also, has anyone grown any of the strains(clones) I got from TGS? NCYD, Deathstar, and Pineapple express. And could/should I mother one of the deathstar? I remember someone saying it's not good to mother a clone, but it's clone only so how the hell else you gonna do it? lol.

PS> I have plenty, possibly too many, of these. In accordance with forum rules, I am not selling or trading anything. But shoot me a PM if you are local, I believe in an "opensource" mindset in this community ;-).

Mothers should be selected after the plant is grown out, cured and smoked in my opinion. Take clones from each plant and continue to grow them until you know what is the winner, then trash the rest.
yep, and clones make the best moms, the 'deterioration' myth is bogus. i replace my moms once a year with a fresh cutting to be trained.

True that, considering elite strains that are "clone only" exist. Funny when people say that! You mean to tell me those clone only strains are only elite for a little while? Bwahahahaha makes a ton of sense. Sometimes people don't think past their gumption!

I need to take this advice:dunce:. I always end up keeping them all until harvest and end up with a crowd. Can't bring myself to trash them but sacrifices need to be made.

Ok, thanks guys,

I am aware of the "proper" way to select true keepers like chewberto said. Don't really have the room/time/patience to do all that right now. Just wanting to get a few good moms to get cuts off for the next grow. Basicly I wanna take clones, root them, then flip a week later, do this every week or two like a few months and constantly be harvesting mini plants, hehe.

The main question I still have(and have asked in other threads) is, Can I put whatever ones I wanna try to mother into 5-gal airpots filled with TGA supersoil or is that gonna burn the shit out of em?

Also, I'm gonna force flower most of these seedlings very early, some as early as tomorrow(tgs clones too). Original plan was to take em out of these #1 pots, and put em in #2s with supersoil before flipping. I'm really busy with other shit so now I've been thinking fuck it and just let em flower in the #1s.... Thoughts/Inputs??

If you want to slow the cloning process takes the cuts 2 weeks into flower. They will root quickly then take up to a month to revert to veg. In the meantime you can evaluate the fems and deal with MUCH smaller plants. They will be as good as any other cut.
I do this often. When test 30 seeds space is a commodity for the clones. Generally taking 2 to be certain one takes.

Good luck AlGore

Thanks for the best wishes...

Quick update:

Gave away a box of some seedlings to an interested party. They have more experience and a good set up and grow the fire so hopefully they get some good out of it...

Still vegging a bunch under the T5, gonna mother 4 of these at some point, not sure what's gonna happen to the rest, still have extras...

I flipped the clones as well as several 3-4 node seedlings, been two weeks since then...

Update... Went out of town for 5 days and the plants really blew up while I was away.

These ones are all vegging still. If no one takes any more off my hands, 4 are getting mothered and the rest are going on 12/12. PM ME!!!

These ones were flipped to 12/12 at like 4 nodes under an HPS, guess I should have used the halide cuz damn did they stretch.

And here are the flowering clones and some self-seeds I had that are starting to flower.

Quick Update on all of this... I have other posts about the issues if you are that interested, lol.

The LED closet:
Started flowering some more plants in there and things were going great. Until I made a fatal error and PM popped up on all the plants in there. This was at the end 6 weeks for all the ones above, and 2 weeks for the new ones. I trashed all the 6 week plants. Then cut off all the PM leaves I could see from the four 2 week Tangies and treated with Mildew Cure.

Grow Tent:
aka Stretched out ass plants, lol. As posted above, these were already really stretched out. Well I fed them right before going out of town, instructing my gf to water as needed. I did not realize until recently that I had fed them the wrong batch and they got a heavy dose of grow nutes, already about 2 weeks into flower. They grew like another foot in 5 days, some up and around the light fixture, lol.

I attempted to weigh them down for a lil horizontal training back under the light....

One GSC bent perfectly over but it then grew straight up and into the light again, lol. So I weighed it down more to lower it but it just kept growing closer to the light. In the end, I cut back the very top bud "stack" and it's maintained an ok distance, not great, but ok.

I had also weighed down the SFV that had grown around the fixture. I looked away for one second and the weights supper cropped the thing. This actually turned out really well, the bend grew back to almost perfectly straight and larger buds formed at lower nodes. This plant gets less direct light but has the best looking buds.

A week or so later, other plants started getting too close. I attempted to super crop one, which worked, but within a day it was bending back up into the light. So I tried to bend it again, causing a bad crack that has not really healed, but has kept the top of the plant bent away from getting badly burned.

Look for traits in a mother that would be good for future generations to come such as vigor, resistance to pests/mould, trichroms at a early age or quickly showing during initial flowering, size of buds and potency of buds are all traits you will look for. Another trait is node spacing look for plants with closer node spacing to increase yield.
