Sexing seed plants by taking clones

I'm planning on growing a fair amount of plants started from seed and would like to take a clipping or two from each teen to determine sex. I was wondering if I can flip the lights immediately when the clippings are taken or do I have to root them first? Also do I have to use rock wool for the clippings or can I just place them all together in a big vase of water?

You can get the clippings from the plants and pretend like you are rooting them just like clones.... You don't need to root them at all just set them in rock wool or some medium and 12 hours of light in one to two weeks you will definitely know the sex of your plants... They really don't need roots to show their sex... They just need to be alive long enough to show what they are.... I am 100% sure this will work because I have tried this myself... Go for it!!!!!!

im not sure if there is any benefit to doing what your planing it might help you determine sex a little quicker
when the plant is mature enough to show sex you can see this from preflowers during the (veg) cycle
4-5 weeks from seed

when the plant is big enough to take a cutting from maybe 3-4 weeks from seed
this will then take another week to show sex which brings it upto 4-5 weeks again to determine sex

maybe you were not aware of sexing with preflowers during veg, or perhaps you have another reason to do it this way?

the quickest overall way would be 12/12 from seed plants can show sex in 20 days from seed

with all due respect , not all strains or even depending on conditions are eager to show sex at 4-5 weeks . And once any cutting or clone flipped to 12/12 will sex in 7-10 days most of the time and can help save on soil and space. Juss my o2, but maybe I could be wrong.

Yep I agree with this. Most strains I've used don't show definite sex until around mid august. Way too long of a wait.

all the strains I started this year showed about 4 weeks old, in my veg tent. you almost need a magnifier lens to see though. and you gotta know what your looking at. usually around the 4th node. I put a few in the flower room around 4-5 weeks and as soon as they showed I took cuttings.

sorry mate i grow hydro, things tend to be faster
its very rare for me to not be able to spot pre-flowers in 4-5 weeks
now if i was growing a 16 week sativa then no, but i would of assumed that's obvious and i would not need to state that

also how soon do you think you can take a healthy clone/shoot from a seedling ?
it will take 3 weeks for the seedling to be big enough for me
then 1 more week for it to show sex, so at best this would still take 4 weeks

i am aware the clone does not need to root to show sex
in fact you could simply cover a shoot on the plant
for 7 days it would show sex, no need to cut anything off the plant to show sex

One more question should I take two clippings from each plant and place both in same rockwool cube in case one dies before it shows sex. What is the success rate for these clippings?

you don't need any medium, you can just keep the bottoms covered with an inch of water (replace every other day) but i like sand for this. 2 $0.99 clear plastic shoe boxes, one with 1.5" of sand and some drain holes, the other flipped upside down for humidity and mist them to keep leaves moist. good for 12 or so cuttings under a flo light on a timer. no food or hormones needed, they'll make it long enough. as far as 2 each, a back up is never a bad idea. soak the sand first, place and label them, water the sand again and let drain, mist and cover and they shouldn't need much more.

So i'm at day 10 and still no sign of sex with the clippings. My roommate says to be patient since the clipping was probably in shock the first few days after being cut.
