Hey all, new here, and also new to growing (indoors)

Ive looked into areo/hydro and im just wanting to grow a single plant, but to take super care of it and hopefully pull at least 4oz from i, ive researched here and there, but all in all, I would really appreciate YOUR opinion of what and where to buy. From the list in the book, he suggests-

6 42watt CFL bulbs with reflective hoods
1-5 Gallon container with drainage holes
Potting soil
Timer
Rockwool
Pertile

Additional supplies: Fans, odor eating lights, thermometer, ph supplies

Im wanting to spend around 100, hopefully less if I can find exactly what im looking for. If you could tell me your opinion, prospective, and be honest with me, I appreciate all input.

Thanks everyone bongsmilie

I've been running a grow box for a while, all at low cost.
just depending on how large you plan to let your plan grow will determine how large you want the size of the pot.
You should really spend the extra money and get Fluoros and avoid CFLs, Fluoros put off better light, more effeciently, and plants tend to like it better.
good luck

Thanks for the input, do the Fluros 42watt equal out to the CFL 42's?

If you want 4+ oz. from a single plant you're going to end up with a plant at least 4-5 feet tall. CFL's are good, T5 flouros are better, HID is the best option(and the most expensive one). You'll need a five gallon pot, too. Don't skimp on the potting soil either. Forget that Miracle Gro shit, although I hear their organic stuff is quite good. Good luck with your project.

cfl's are not enough to grow 4oz from one large plant reliably. Maybe someone can do it with constant tweaking of where the lights are placed but it will be a pain in the ass. 4' flouros won't do well that way either.

Growing with cfl's or regular flouro's efficiently and easily generally requires more plants and that they all be smaller. Look up what drbudgreeengenes (or whatever his name is) does with cfl's and a handfull of little plants. His method is probably the best for what you want.

If you MUST have only ONE plant and must use flouro's of some sort I would use 4' flouros vertically mounted surrounding the plant and maybe a couple cfl's to cover the top. You will need a lot of flouro power to sustain one big plant.

Yeah, I'm really trying to stick to just one plant, so if I want the plant to be big, Ill have to increase the wattage the plant is getting? So essentially more CFL's/whatever lightsource im using. Also, do you guys just swing by a local hardware place/homedepot or is there a good online website?

I'm inclined to agree. I imagine heat would be a problem, though.

I mean, the Seemorebuds guy did it and he only used 3 CFL's
Nothing I said disputed that, friend. I was merely suggesting that the kind of light array you require for your plan will give off some heat. I didn't say you couldn't still grow. You just have to address the heat issue once you know how bad it may or may not be.

Which seemorebuds video shows that grow and do you know about how far into the video is that? I have the video's I'd like to look it up. I vaguely remember seeing that grow.

Here's the guru of cfl's:
YouTube - DrBudGreengenes's Channel

I bought my cfl's at Lowes since they are close and have decent prices but you can find them at wallyworld or wherever. I tried using several of the 42w (120w equivalent) and it did work but not anywhere as good as a small HID does. I quickly went back to HID and just got a few used 250w halides free off craigslist.
The cfl's I used were less than $10 ea, but a 250 HID can easily be found used for about the same price as all the cfl's you would need. There was a place that had 250w HPS lights for $20 complete and new online but I can't locate the link.

Note that there is a subforum here for CFL
CFL Growing

Ask those guys, I'm sure you'll find some folks who CAN do it, but most here (myself included) will try to sway you towards HID lights.

ok man, i know that all these guys on the thread are telling you just to keep getting bigger and bigger lights. however, keep your thoughts realistic, not everyone needs a HID light, maybe 4 or 5 flouros would fit your plan better. (just as a side note, if your also going to grow as a hobby, and not just for end results, having lights that you can move, and adjust individually will benefit your plant, especially since you would have the ability to move the lights on how your plant grows.) The bottom line, Marajuana is a weed, it will grow just about anywhere and under some harsh conditions, so if you make a mistake, you'll more than likely have time to correct it. Your plant WILL grow under any lights. Good luck, post some pics when you got it set up
