I used to use the water cup and paper towel methods. I find if you use professional seeds, viability isn't an issue, so I always plant directly in a starter pot.

Yeah at this point I am almost ready to try a couple seeds and debating which method to use.

After failing to get any of my 8-10 year old bag seeds (30+) I had to germinate.....I am afraid to try one of the seeds I just bought! :P

You'll be fine, as long as you just bought them.

I tired the paper towel deal, the peroxide deal, straight to soil deal, etc....it was disheartening.....

The water / peroxide method I almost got a couple as they looked cracked, but I think they were just swelled up and not growing as after putting in soil never made it.

Right now I think I am going to do 1 seed at a time until I find a method I can trust.

How long are you letting them germ for?

Basically I have planted and waited for weeks........soaked with plain water 24-36 hours.......soaked with water/peroxide 24-36 hours...............placed in paper towels in ziplocks for days on end.....in the end none of them ever grew and they ended up rotting.

These seeds had been through temps of -20 to 100+F stored poorly for over 8 years in storage and shed.

I have had no problems sprouting anything else early this year for my garden so I know it's not me!! LOL! at least I hope so.....

They are more than likely not viable. They say 5 years, and that's with optimal conditions.
