Seedlings, HPS or Fluoro?

Think it'd be better to start my seedlings with some cheap shoplights and a couple fluoro light bulbs or just put it right to my 400w hps which has a hortilux bulb that has 30% more blue spectrum. Think the light will be too strong for them at that age?

i would go with the fluoros

use the fluo. nice and close, they don't put off any heat so you don't have to worrie about them getting burned

you can use the hid light from the start but keep it about 18-20" above for the first week or so then you can lower it bit by bit!you will havta mist ya plants and soil more often coz things will dry out much quicker under a hid!the amount you lower it by is all about common sense!

You can use the hps but dont really need it until flower. I would go with the flor for now. Nice and close like 1" away from the top, and when it grows up into the light move it up a little bit.

Save you hps bulb life for flowering and go with fluoros.

But we're talking a 40w max fluoro vs a 55,000 lumen bulb with over a year and a half of hours on it. Its a 40$ bulb, I wont mind spending the extra 40 a year for extra good vegitation. But will the fluros have that much more blue and green spectrum in them? And I dont have to worry about heat right now, with the light on my closet stays at 70. It's a big closet.

you can use whatever light you want!some ppl use floro's just to be on the safe side coz there scared a hid will kill there seedlings but it wont as long as you dont have the light too close and the temps correct in ya grow room!just do like i said in the previous post!im talking from personal experience.

Number 1- if you are growing from a seed you do not do not want excess heat drying out your plants in the first few weeks. They don't need this type of light yet. fluor works great. And if you want to do it right you don't use hps for the veg stage you use mh.

One of the reasons that ppl use fluor in the veg stage is because they work, but mh will do a better job. With this said it also depends on the size of the system and the time that you allow the plants to vegg.
