a buddy of mine got a cutting online and it has this on it. What the hell is it? I suggested a dead pup, but is it safe to remove?

It looks like it's a faded bloom. It is not a San Pedro however. It's what's commonly called an Night Blooming Cereus..

Neither. San Pedro doesn't have the deep valleys between lobes. That's a cereus trait. I grow lots of cacti.

Here are some San Pedro and Cereus pics. It looks more like Cereus to me, but it could be slightly dehydrated and just appear that way.cereus.jpg 38821-trichocereus_peruvianus12.jpg hybrid_vs_pedro.jpg
