Ruwtz Maneuver Vol 1

I've decided after a whole six minutes of trying to use it, the journal section of RIU is junk and largely dysfunctional, so for my own sake - and on the advice of good peoples - i'm gonna write mine here instead. I'll do my best to update regularly whilst trying to avoid being a total cliche or noob spaz freak posing as aspirational weed baron. I'm just in it for the fun and the dope, I promise.

Peace & fucking, everyone. :blsmoke::blsmoke::blsmoke::blsmoke:

Ok here goes...

I wisely spent all my savings and hand constructed a dedicated grow room, a 200sqft exterior structure which you can learn about here: https://www.rollitup.org/t/8-months-10-000-and-a-whole-lotta-hard-work-this.915257/

Instead of clogging that thread i'll be journaling the first grows in this building right here.

I have caregiver status in a medical state.

Quick setup rundown:

[1] two tier seed/clone nursery running T5HO 4 bulb 4ft lamps running 24/0, popping everything in Root Riots. 150 plant capacity

[2] veg: 8 x 5000k cob 3590's at 1.4amps dimmable in veg running 18/6 - sharing same room as nursery and 1-ton mini split cooling, oscillating fans and scrubber. Veg = 3 x 7ft ebb & flow table fed by 55gal drum res on timer. 40 plant capacity using Grodan Pargro 6" blocks

[3] flower: sealed room, 4 x Gavita 750DE's + 2-ton mini split cooling + Quest 105 dehu + CO2. 16-24 plant capacity using 7gal coco + scrogging

Right now running four strains all from seed from various vendors: Blackjack, Larry OG, 24 Carat (Tangie x Kosher), and Gorilla Glue from some bag seed. All strains in early veg currently.

Also have Girl Scout Cookies and Blueberry Kush lining up patiently behind. I'll pop once i'm properly into veg with the first lot above.

This room is a lot of firsts all at once which is a real challenge but I have the teeth for it and i'm not fucking about. I expect it will take me around a year or several cycles to get this space to where I want it: clean, quick, automated and maxed out. For this first run at least, stick around if you wanna know if I have the nuts to make this better than something resembling adequate.

Wish me luck.

The only strains worth talking about currently are the Blackjack and Larry OG. Both strains are under the same conditions in same location and only a couple days' apart.

- - - Daytime 74-76F, night time 68-70F, RH 65%.

- - - 3x7ft e&f table, currently manually flooding from 55gal res as needed since plants aren't big enough to be drinking daily on the timer.

- - - Being fed General Hydroponics trio + Floralicious + CalMag, bennies = Botanicare's Rhizoblast + Hydroguard also Recharge once per week and Hormex for transplanting only.

Week 1 TDS = 575ppm, which includes tap water base of around 280ppm, which I know from the city water report is made up of bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, sodium in that order, with noticeable amounts of Ca, Mg, silica and a touch of K.

Vegging week 2 nutes to follow tomorrow as they have just been mixed and I like them to sit and oxy overnight. Aiming for around 700ppm.

All seeds were popped in Root Riot plugs and are vegging in 6x6x4 Pargro Quick Drain blocks sitting on rubber grommets to aid drainage & air pruning.

I am keeping daily paper grow logs for all strains, documenting canopy, room and exterior temps & humidity, pH & TDS of any feed/water given, and any notes on growth etc. This admin is laborious but essential if i'm going to bounce from any mistakes or spot any patterns worth responding to in terms of plant traits.

BlackJack by Sweet Seeds (from Midweek Song) - x14 fems germinated 6 Aug, 12 made it to veg with 2 sprouts dying off before rooting. Currently at day 17 since germination. I had wanted to move to veg sooner as the roots were exploding at day 6, but I was waiting on my cob lighting kits to arrive from Timer Grow Lights (highly recommended, btw) and so they remained in nursery until day 9 or 10. Future runs will move as soon as several roots are showing from the plug.

Pic below shows all 12 plants at day 17 / entering 2nd week of veg. Plants are numbered 1-9 as you read them left to right, top to bottom:

Positive third leaf set growth on most except #1 which looks stunted and first leaf sets are badly damaged - unsure of cause. Some paling of lower leaves and leaf tips on others, which I assume is the plant moving mobile nutes to new growth, and which is why i'm feeling like that second higher feed is in demand here. Also I know CaMg def is possible given the neutral medium, so today a light foliar feed of dissolved epsom salts was applied.

No roots have yet been seen emerging from the base of the block, and i'd like to encourage new roots to seek moisture instead of pampering however it is difficult to gauge how dry to let these Pargro blocks go before feeding as they remain heavy for several days without watering.

Larry OG by Cali Connection - x12 fems germinated 4 Aug, only 9 made it to veg after several seeds didn't pop at all. Currently at day 19 since germination. Similarly abundant root growth was seen around day 7, with multiple furry fibrous strands poking from the plug, and they could have done with moving over sooner.

Pic below shows all 9 plants at day 19 / entering 2nd week of veg. Plants are also numbered as you read them left to right, top to bottom.

Decent growth coming through on third leaf sets on all plants, but again some leaf paling especially between veins on lower leaves possibly indicating CaMg def or something similar. #2, 4 and 9 lower leaves look particularly poor, also with some light blotching. Week 2 feed is also due tomorrow - table floods at 8am lights on.

The Larry has been a little more temperamental in growth patterns - coming in bursts rather than gradual - and some proved quite leggy at first (#1, 2 & 4 in particular) despite adequate light and tight noding. No new stretch in the past 4-5 days. and others are very short stacked.

Forgot to mention this thread is totally open to comments, observations, criticisms etc. Its all good by me and pretty much the only reason I would post here in the first place, so let me know what you think.

Is there a reason why I can't upload images right now? I don't see the button and when I drag and drop to this text box I get the warning that "uploads are not available".

Is this a thing or am I being thick?

I suspect I am developing problems with half of the Larry OG ladies. Some minor leaf chlorosis is now showing as dark lesions in leaves higher up, although not at the top/newest growth (we're at third node and 4th developing). Lesions are unpredictable but generally at leaf edges on the second node. It is happening on 4 of 9 plants. There is some paling of the lowest, oldest leaf tips but not excessive. One plant only has light brown spots on its first node leaf set.

New veg week 2 feed this morning was at 750ppm / pH6.0, and this is only the fourth feed since moving to veg 10 days ago.

Environment is fine, lights are bang on.

I have decent pics but they can't be uploaded right now due to site error. I am trying to keep a photo log of these lesions to see if they deteriorate or improve since feeding.

Lesions most closely match those of potassium or phosphorus deficiency but I do not see any leaf tip curling or burning, and new growth does not appear stunted or abnormal. I'm happy with growth progression in 20 days from germ.

Theory: any of the nute deficiencies is due to poor root development preventing proper uptake as I have not seen roots showing in the 4" blocks in this same period, which is contrary to the rapid root growth I saw in seedling stage. These Pargro blocks never seem to dry out completely so I have been watering gingerly, but I also understand that even at 100% saturation there is a good amount of air in these things hence roots should be able to breathe.

Any thoughts? Sorry I know its hard without the pics.

In the past i've used a 1/2 strength foliar treatment to fix basic nute deficiencies, although it only goes to work on those affected areas and does not address the plants' problem entirely. If I have root issues then it needs fixing ASAP.

Anyone using these blocks and have anything to add regarding drainage and watering schedule? I chose these over soil due to cleanliness and other peoples' recommendations, but at this point i'm really missing the ease of a good quality soil!

I'm sure you'll overcome these hiccups and do fine, and I'm here for the show! I'm switching to a coco-based media right now, and scared I'm going to miss my soil too.

Have you talked to or seen @AlphaPhase or his crews gardens? They do blocks and i believe are all moving to or already at DE fixtures.
Thanks, I don't know those guys. I took a quick look at his main thread but even a thorough researcher like myself can't be reading 180+ pages. From pics it looks like they are stacking regular Grodans. AFAIK Grodan produces these Pargro blocks specifically for quick draining and I would expect this feature of design warrants its own specific approach in terms of watering. I am e&f so watering from the bottom, and I have reduced the drain height to its lowest possible point to keep the water level down and allow the blocks to wick instead of soaking. This way only the bottom quarter of the block is fully submersed during watering, which I run for 10 mins on an arbitrary basis depending on whether the blocks feel like they need it (by weight).

Questions specifically regarding the Pargro blocks then:

[1] is 4 waterings in the first 10 days of veg too much? Feed has been increased incrementally. They are not showing signs of overwatering
[2] how often do you flush? They have not been flushed once in this period - possible salt buildup?
[3] how are you draining these blocks? Currently I have them sat on rubber grommets, but am probably going to move to a hydration layer, although either way they will be holding on to a fair quantity of water at all times

All answers are appreciated, but extra props to those using these blocks in veg.

Those were from yesterday and actually the lesions seem to have worsened overnight, and we can add another plant to the sickbay too. So now 5 from 9 of the Larry are showing the same issue.

I showed my hydro guy and he says nothing to worry about, that they are babies and sometimes babies get sick and parents panic too much.

I'm not panicking, but i'm inclined to disagree with him and say this isn't something I should just ignore.

No thoughts around here?

Gonna do the first res change in the next day or so... that might level things out if there's any imbalance in the feed.

Mag deficiency is my guess. Bit early for that though isnt it? You havent created a lock out?

You also have some leaf curl starting and by the looks some over watering as well in pics 3 and 4.

But ima Noob so don't listen to much to me.

i finally found you. skimmed most of your posts too, so my bad if i missed something.
black necrotic spots could be fungal, bacterial, or a virus. if you are foliar feeding or misting, stop asap.

they are young, i'd wait a week or two, see if new growth develops the issue. if not, remove infected leaves.

i see no deficiency yet, no burns, no curls.

in answer to questions listed above:

1) no, i'd have done more myself

2) i rinse the res with every dump. only takes a minute to rinse, rub down, and rinse res again before refilling with fresh water

3) once water roots grow out of the block and into the table, the block saturation won't matter. it does now as roots won't try to thrive with no reason (o2 and a need for water/nutrients)

when they are bigger, with roots in the table, the block saturation will only be an issue for mold/mildew and pests. plants will also use much more water once they have hit the 12'' mark.

glad i found you! subbed now ;)

First res change today: at veg day 11 so its probably about time. Nice and slimy in there once I pumped most of it out into the rose garden. Trying to let nothing go to waste here but if this doesn't work out i'll just toss it.

I have also ditched the rubber grommets elevating the Pargro blocks on the flood table and gone with a very thin layer of hydroton, as I believe this will drain better and we're still good if roots come through.

A 25L bag was slightly too short to fill the table completely but i'll live.

Day 22 on hydroton 2.jpg Day 22 on hydroton 6.jpg Day 22 on hydroton.jpg

When I lifted one of the blocks off its rubber 'stand' I saw a whole bunch of ants in there enjoying the damp, the little fuckers. I swept them away and now i'm searching the room for their "in", as I was pretty certain I had sealed this place up good. The APB is out on ants.
