ROOTS!

Sorry in advance, I know the gentleman sounds as exciting as diarrhoea.
Please have a look at the first few minutes of the posted video.

He makes an interesting case for not using incrementally larger pots as the plant gets bigger.
He supplies lots of photographic evidence. it shows the roots forming an ever increasing spiral as the pots are increased in size as opposed to a true branching system we see above ground.

It then struck me, that the largest plants I grow are normally put directly into the soil with a cool drink bottle dome to keep the pests out the first 2 or 3 weeks.
I'm pretty conflicted as to how to apply this to future plantings.

If you were bored enough to watch the first few minutes till it comes to the spiralling roots (that picture says a thousand words), I'd be interested in your take.

I know people always say you can't put a small plant in a large pot, which is nonsense anyway, you just water it in small amounts leading the roots around.

Rule 1: Tell No One

Rule 2: Bigger the roots the bigger the plant the bigger the bud

besides that ain't weed

good luck

I know he used trees, but the response seemed pretty uniform across all the species he used.

Anyway, I was bored so I took a seedling opened up its rootball and rearranged the roots more uniformly, will tell you how it does if it works out. think I forgot to snip the taproot, I think he said snip before they reach 4"

It's the transplanting up from cup to 1 gallon to 3 gallon that gets me decent yields and healthy growth through flowering in the small 3 gallon pots. Some of my plants go 11 or 12 weeks in that against convention.

The final root balls have become solid all the way through the pot at harvest. When I didn't let the plants root well enough before and transplanted too soon the final rootball was more out and down around the outside of the ball.

I don't have tons of experience but that is what I have seen in hundreds of different hybrids on the few rooms I have run perpetual in.

This is true for amended potting soil and peat lite mix like pro mix for me.

Yeah, I don't have time to waste growing in 3 gal pots.
My biggest plants are always seeds straight into the soil or into the biggest pot or container I can afford to fill. Have used even plain soil with only kelp watering when I was still young, before the internet. became a thing. We have winter rains here so the soil stays nice and damp, but with good drainage to the river across the street. As soon as winter starts I just cut branches off whatever plant I want more of, stick em in the ground and leave them until summer, by which time they are healthy and rooted. I'd like to do at least one 1500gal tree this summer, but having a hard time finding a source for the growbag.. and then the rest of soil and whatever large containers I have around. Its just a matter of timing the planting right, I'll be raising plants under a light in advance. already giving the system a test run.

In hydro, I don't think any of this is too important, plants grow different roots in moist oxygen environments than in dry anaerobic ones.

I do like the system on the bottom of the page on the site.
https://rootmaker.com/retail/24

It is a 100 foot roll 17" high for $385

Going through their catalogue it looks like the recommendation is to plant up to the next size with the distance between the side of the pot to the rootball being no more than 4 inches

If plants are shifted to a container that has a sidewall difference greater than 4 inches, some root branching opportunities or sales could be missed.

It has to fit in my spare bedroom. I am a medical grower growing inside in soil perpetually for a plant a week harvest to stay within allowed plant count and on hand usable meds.

And you are talking about outdoor trees.

We grow for quality meds in mineral rich potting soil with a low ceiling height.

Here is my flower room. I run 8-10 different plants for a variety of canabanoids to work with continually.

Lot of different situations that require different methods. They all can work. These use Ocean Forest with 20% large perlite mixed in from seed/ clone to harvest and Pure Blend Pro Grow in flower when the soil is depleted.

Water only up to 7 weeks through transplants in veg and the first 2 weeks in flower typically.

Best yield from a seed plant was 7.8 oz dry dense buds in the #3 nursery pot. Which is really only 2.5 gallons volume. Average is 4-5. Or 16-20 per light per month with 600 watt bulbs and a 315 cmh for finishing and stretch. Best month ever 25 oz dry nugs.

I don't weigh the small buds and trim. It goes into coconut oil mostly.

Serious fear and allergy of mold. I dry sift hash and we make coconut oil and are about to try "green dragon" with some 151 rum.

Michigan sucks. No everclear.
I have a friend that works at XYZ drug company. He brings me pharma quality Alcohol (Eth). Gets used to winter oils for shatter......Sometimes falls into a "punch bowl"......Had a cpl a ladies ask what it was when they saw it going in.....Told them it was kickapoo joy juice and it'll make your clothes fall off.... One said "Oh oh." The other said "Lets get the party started!" and filled a cup.

Wife was standing there and said. "Those are so and so I work with, Good going. I'll never look at them the same after this." LOL "You invited them" was all I said.....

I didn't even know you could get 151 rum in this state. I pick up 1/2gals of everclear when I go back to NY. If you are down around Flint/A2/Lansing area I could pick you up some when I go back.

I appreciate you running indoor, I am preparing plants to grow as trees come spring.
Been looking at some undercurrent setups under lights indoors with stems as thick as some of the 8' sativas I've grown.
I think I learned lots from the second video. I liked where he explained how roots are the last in priority of where the produce of photosynthesis gets distributed to.

I have hundreds of seeds so I've been playing around with seedlings a lot lately.
If someone wants to believe the roots of one plant does not grow much different to the next apart from if they are tap root or side roots (forgot the English word now), that is their prerogative.
Roots in hydraton or, rockwool or netpots would naturally air trim where needed in a hydro setup. I am using a coco mix, draining to waste for the purpose of the current experiment.

I am trying to establish the biggest root network I can, our summers hit 110F days quite often and these plants need to be able to drink outdoors.

I am now going to plant some seed in those plastic plant bags you get from the nursery. Three will be the coco mix into the bags straight as they come from the shop.
the other three will be the same bags, but with lots of perforations with a hole punch lined on the inside with 3mm upholstery foam. The theory is the root tips would go somewhat into the foam and then air prune. and new branches of the root should start about 4 inches back.

As it is my first run of the experiment, I will have to scratch around often in the bags as I don't know how long the roots will take to reach the edges.

How much did you pay for your CMH setup? it looks like they should be at about the $1/W range.
Which is very good for the output measuring on par with some of the top range LEDS.

For roots and huge plants. The old guys out here in the woods and farmland have metal and wood sided enclosures outside to house their medical card allowed plant count with a roll off or open roof (not visible from any angle is the rule) and use regular garden beds with enriched soil and well and rain water.

My friends dad grows 14' tall diesel hybrids every year out there. Great plants. Fills he barn with them hanging whole upside down as the old guys believe that the thc in the roots and stems will seep down to the buds. Lol.

They hang there for months sometimes so they dry real slow and taste and smoke deliciously.

Anyway. I have seen many pro indoor grows with holes drilled all around the plastic nursery pots for root development the way you describe the holes you made in the bags.

I know they keep doing it so they must have better roots from the air pruning.

I just personally don't have the need to grow the largest plant I can. I focus on envirement and happy plants reaching as close to their canabanoid potential as I can. And just do it continually 1 plant at a time for 3 years with no break already. We have all we need. I am happy the law has allowed me to do it. I was hiding with my medicine for many years. Since I was a teenager really.

And no one is complaining about my results. The 315 cmh I use to add fuller spectrum and some uv to my flower room is a Sun System remote reflector and a Galaxy dimmable ballast with a Phillips 3100k bulb and it was about $360 delivered from growers house dot com.

If I was primarily flowering with them I would want 3 where I have 2 600 hps now. Still lower watts for similar yield.

Good luck with your projects. :-)

I was watching a video this morning where Maus ran the numbers, and where an MH would sit at an efficiency of 1, these sits at 1.7 in terms of photon output, exactly the same as the best LED units on the list. But 300W is 300W when dealing with gas discharge.

I enjoy playing with plants, succulents and cacti of all kinds. Sometimes what we learn pursuing one, helps more with one of the others. As long as I am learning something I feel happy generally.
Learning is one of my favourite things, a reward contained in its own action.

Here is a good example of a flower that has a lot more frost after being under the cmh for a while.

And to tie it into your root thread. I helped his girl grow the best root ball she could with traditional transplanting and wet/dry cycle watering methods.

I will continue to mix hps and cmh until led advances some more. I am a plug and play kind of grower with little money. Lol.

I actually never even watered a houseplant before I got my medical card.

I am reverse of most in that I am going to start my first vegetable and also flower garden out on my property and maybe even a greenhouse.

I am going to have to use what I have learned growing marijuana to grow tomatoes now.

Tomatoes are great fun, and taste so much better than stuff harvested early for the store.
Just prepare your soil well to prevent the tips of the tomatoes going rotten as the season progresses.

I posted a nice video in the gardening section recently that shows some really good micro farming ideas.
If you are running any kind of greenhouse or even big indoor grow, I think you have enough excess light around the edges of trays to do a thriving business with micro greens.

Small one planted late in 2009 to avoid detection over walls. Frosty as shit, using a bad and way too small container with only some soil I dug up in the yard.
