some people go 24hrs light the entire veg cycle. whereas some do 18/6 for conservation of power. some growers also believe that a plant will only use 18 hours of light anyway. fluorescents lights can only penetrate about 2 feet into the foliage. so if you plan on vegging your plants over 2ft in height, then this would be the time to bring out the 400w. most people start flowering around 12"-18" because plants can double in height during flowering

seems like a pretty good idea to use both but for my first grow i think i will try flours for the first 2 weeks on a 18/6 and then when they get about 12-14 tall ill probably move to the 400 watt hp for flowering on a 12/12 sound right?

Only really use the flouros for about 10 days max. I'd be inclined towards a week but it all depends on the strain. Then put the hps on for for the next few weeks. Start with the light at about twelve inches above the tops of the plants. When you put on the big light rem' to give your plants a nice feed, so let them dry out a little beforehand. Give 'em something special too like some nutes. if you can, organise a way to move the flouro's around to the sides of the plants. You'll need to keep the plants on 18/6 for a few weeks. Or until they are from 12-18 inches tall. Then switch the lights to 12/12. You only switch to 12 12 when plants are big enough to flower.
