Read the article...and the funny part to me is the not-quite-spoken desire to be the CO of the East, cashing in on the mj tourism before any of the other states in ;the area, that are talking up legalization.

I have been saying for quite some time that it will be greed, not a desire for giving the people personal freedom, that will see us smoking legal weed. :bigjoint:

I have been thinking about this ever since the thread started and I read the article.

Now, I have no real idea how this is going to play in RI...but there is one thing to consider in terms of overall country-wide legalization:

Rhode Island sits astride what we North-Easters sometimes refer to as the "Bos-Wash", the I-95 corridor running north to south on the East coast. It actually is longer than that, of course, going from Maine to Florida...but along the way it goes through Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, the most populated section of New Jersey, NY City, Connecticut, Rhode Island itslef, Boston to the north, Maine.....

The point here is that, with this legalization scheme (flawed though it may be in the details, initially...), it will put a CO-style rec-legal state, with all that entails, right in the middle of one the most populous and concentrated regions in our country, which also has great monetary and political power. I don't know what percentage of our nation lives there, but it is a very high number vs land area. MJ legalization will no longer be something vague that happens on TV and way out west....it will be happening right in the feds backyard, and in one of the original 13 colonies.

In short, it will be very hard for the federal gov't to ignore...and at first (just like CO) there will be a huge number of pot tourists flocking to the states MJ stores. The world won't come to an end, either, and a lot more people will be watching.

Another thing: I-95 from the mid-Atlantic to the North-East is not some lonely 2-lanes-each-way interstate highway. It carries a MASSIVE amount of traffic, every day, and out-of-state folks going up there and buying weed won't be able to be caught by LEOs while bringing their stuff back. It would be like trying to stop a flood by shouting at it. There will just be too many of them. ONE legal state in the Bos-Wash will have folks from Richmond to Maine, and other points to the west, smoking legally purchased weed. Even the logistics will be huge...I see all stores selling out in the first day, and long-term demand far outstripping supply....by huge margins.

Colorado let the cat out of the bag...but this has the potential to be much bigger.

They definitely need the money more than the surrounding states. Mass. will most likely be going rec. legal after 2016, that's why RI Leg. is jumping this one. Too bad RI is a shithole, for the most part. I live about 5 miles from the border and try to avoid going there whenever possible..last time i was down there the parking lot i was in was littered with used needles..state full of junkies.

Sounds like a race to get their paws on some easy money... RI in the lead by a bit, Mass coming up fast.

I just hope that they realize that the tax returns will be very short term... Once it is legal to grow, the end product will more closely resemble tomatoes than alcohol in proliferation. Sure... some folks will buy, probably quite a few. But anyone who thinks that $20 per gram is going to be the stable prices for the next 15 years is living in a dreamworld.

IT IS A WEED. And a very easy one to grow. At the end of the summer, there are so much tomatoes around from gardeners that you can't give them away. 6 high yield plants in the backyard would give me more than I could smoke in 10 years. I'd just give it away.... like tomatoes.

I agree it will be greed that pushes this. It would be huge for RI, tax $$. Unless, the old politics peeks its nasty head then all the money will disappear!! That's Rhody for ya
Long as I can get to a dispensary without driving all the way out to CO, I'll be happy!

Maybe someday, like tomatoes, you can buy seedlings at Home Depot and bud at roadside stands
You jest, sir...8-) but that is EXACTLY what I see in about 10 years.

Well...maybe not quite that open. Probably just like brewing beer. You go to the brewshop to get your ingredients and supplies, do your thing at home.

But 20.00 a gram? Fuggetaboutit..,.

$20/G may not be the avg, but there will always be a quality index. My neighbor grows tomatoes every year..plants them, waters them, that's it, at the end of the year he always has hundreds of deformed bland tomatoes. I grow about a half doz heirlooms, i tend them, fertilize, do insect protection, I might not get hundreds but they are always plump and tasty. Which one is going to get a premium price on the market? Using alcohol as an example you can buy a bottle of vodka for $10 or you can get one for $100, legalization didn't change the fact the people will pay for a premium product. Plus, the more time I spend around this site, I come to realize that many people just can't grow anything without constant help, so I'm not too worried about an influx of A++ grade buds destroying the market.

No I'm serious. Well maybe not about the roadside stands.

Actually, the seedling thing is not so farfetched... I can see that happening. I get catnip seedlings for Tux and Maggie... Why not weed?

My guess is that the govt will try to discourage homegrown, as it will cut into their tax revenues. It won't work, of course.... but they won't let THAT stop them.

You are correct... I buy craft beer, but not PBR. Single malt, rather than rotgut. And one of the reasons I am so pumped about a dispensary nearby is so I can get high quality indica strains 9f my choice, rather than the grab bag one finds from a street dealer.

I'm not too poor to the point of not being able to afford good quality stuff. (Thank God) And I appreciate good quality.

I sure hope that this thing passes...
