Its filtered water.

Just buy a standalone filter set up.
I just got one for $50 filters down to 0.5 micron. But read the labels and price out the filters. I see a lot that are 5 micron.

Those DIY filters work great for a little bit. If u intend on using it for a large amount of water it won't be worth the cost. Most RO Systems get the cost per gallon down to $.08-$.12 cents per gallon, Stand alone filters $.18-$.25 Brita Jug Filters are around $.25per gal....
These prices figure in filter cost, water waste and estimate water cost based on national average

I just bought an RO Filter for $90 shipped I have been researching them for a long time and this is the best I could find.
Filter cost is often overlooked!
I just wanted to remind people that it is better to just pay the money at the beginning and save later. I have relearned that lesson over and over (especially with growing)!!!

Yup. Much like ink carts, they lure you in with low priced units, but consumables are skyhigh.

$90 for the full set up, or just the replacement RO filter?

3 or 5 stage? how many GPD?

Only thing holding me back from RO is the waste water. The ratios suck, and I'm in a drought area.
(that and I think .5 micron isn't bad.)

It is the whole system, 5 stage, 100GPD
Here is the one I got AQUA-SAFE AQUARIUM II REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER FILTER - eBay (item 150267854530 end time Jul-11-08 20:00:00 PDT)

As far as ratios go, I saw a few lately that give u 4gallons and wastes one, but that gets worse as the membrane wears, and/or if u have low water pressure (that is where a pump comes into play). If u stay on top of changing the membrane u will keep waste low. My system suggests setting it at 3:1 ratio (good:bad) and changing the membrane when it gets to a 1:2 ratio for normal wear. I don't know how long membranes last but it's definately more than a few months, I want to say atleast a year but don't quote me. They run around $40+-
