What's up rollitup?

I've recently been making the switch to a more raw diet these past couple months and to be honest I'm absolutely loving it. There is a wealth of information available online that has helped make things easier for me, but I was hoping maybe there were some members on here that are embracing a raw foods diet or have looked at it in the past and would like to talk about it their experience. What has and hasn't worked favourite recipes etc.

I am completely addicted to making whacky green smoothies. That has been my absolute favourite part of embracing raw foods and trying to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods. Blending up anything I can think of and creating wholesome easily digestible meals is AWESOME.

Cool, glad to hear it.

I love going on vegetarian "cleanses" avoiding meat for a day or two. But never for more than a day or so...

Makes my body feel 100% better. Noticeable differences in health and attitude.

In the documentary Food Matters, I heard the human body works twice as hard to digest cooked foods compared to raw.
Not to mention avoiding all those unnatural additives :spew:

I plan to start juicing next spring when I have abundant greens.

What's some of your favorite raw recipes?
Do you still consume raw seafood/meats?

Why wait til the spring to start. If you've got room for a small 1 gallon pot or two you've got space to grow some Swiss Chard, some Parsley, or some Kale etc.

I am by no means 100% raw or vegan. I still understand the appeal of some sizzling bacon or a nice grilled hamburger, but I have been making a serious effort to extremely reduce my consumption of such things. My absolute favourite recipe as I already mentioned is a green smoothie, but I also really enjoy making "pie crust" using dates, almonds, hemp seeds, and honey and then filling it with blueberry chia pudding.

My go to meal is to sprout some quinoa then mix it into a giant salad. Assorted greens, sweet bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, hemp seed and some dried cranberries. Then I drizzle some super easy dressing. 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp honey, salt and pepper to taste

I've fasted for ten days before and felt great, but I don't think i'd do it again because you lose alot of strength. But I have bought a juicer and plan to do juice fasts or just eat salads or fruits and veggies for a set amount of time. Give the body a break and fill it with natural vitamins for a change. My problem is there's not that many fruit and veggies that I like so I have to experiment and find things that I like or at least can tolerate.

That was an excellent film. Very very informative. I just saw it recently when they did a free online 10 day screening. It made me very interested in researching vitamin therapy.

  • I like to do intermittent fasting for periods of 16-30 hours once every week or two. I think one day I will buy a juicer if even just so I can make this raw ice cream I saw a recipe for. I'll try to find the actual recipe, but basically you need a juicer that has an option to run a blank attachment. Then you take frozen fruit such as banana or strawberry and put it through the juicer. Because it's on a blank setting , meaning nothing actually gets strained out, you get a very nice fruit puree in a long brick in the shape of your juicers hole. It looked really cool. The lady alternated frozen banana and then strawberry through the juicer to create a swirl effect.

Gonna be brief, because this will open up a huge can of worms in many forums, but... low fat raw vegan is the only sustainable and effective method of healthy raw food eating. Majority of calories from simple carbs via fruits. A lot of fresh greens. That's about it. A very small amount of nuts or avacado perhaps, but really not necessary.

But no body wants to go there, because it's way too hardcore for most, as it requires huge emotional vulnerabilities to give up all the comfort foods we've come to live by. Most who go raw depend on "substitutes" for these comfort foods, almost always made of a huge amount of overt fats... if you can at least stay away from overt fat sources you will feel a lot better than with...

Just my OPINION though... based on a lot of study... feel free to PM me if you want to talk about it, I can recommend a good book... I don't debate this shit publicly anymore.

Are you raw or regular vegan? I've eaten a few raw meals before, it 's not too bad. It was a raw burrito with lime avocado sauce, beets, carrots, cabbage; wrapped in a dehydrated spinach and sesame "tortilla."

One thing I do think is stupid, is the whole agave craze. It 's just pure fructose, like corn syrup. It's actually very bad for you. Too much of any one type of sugar is bad. I mix: maple, agave and black strap molasses, if I absolutely must use a sweetner. Most of the time I use stevia leaves steeped in water and use that water as a sweetener. But, I don't use sweeteners very often. I use plants, like fruit or whole corn, etc.

I fluctuate wildly, anywhere from LFRV to full on healthy meat eating, basically. I don't like to eat meats that aren't free-range, and I avoid preservatives and all forms of refined sweeteners as much as possible. I don't even really like to drink juice from a store, because it's been stripped of it's fiber content more often than not... when I'm being "good" I prefer fresh made juices with all pulp in tact, (blended juices, not "juicer" juices, generally) big ass banana smoothies, and as much fresh fruit as I can get my hands on.

Was easily doing 3500 calories of fruit a day for a while, and I never felt better in my life. It was like being a child again. I have all my exuberance and energy BACK, FINALLY.

It's just hard to maintain because a) I live in a cold climate where fruit availability is relatively limited... without variety, an all fruit diet can feel really limiting to the part of the being that craves the sensory pleasure of food variety... and b) I am part of the previously described camp who finds it hard to STAY raw because of all the traditional foods I enjoy, and the limited capacity I have to deal with the sort of emotional detox that happens as our bodies transition to a healthier state. However, I would much rather eat those traditional foods in a form that wil satisfy whatever craving I'm having than try to substitute with a high fat "raw food equivalent"... they almost always fail to satisfy the craving, and usually leave me feeling sick after. I've learned that, if I'm driven to stay raw at the time, I can quell ANY craving with a large dose of fruit... and that if I'm going to give in and have something "good", I will go all the way and enjoy it.

"Canna Sylvan
Op, you have a dehydrator?"

I do though I don't use it very often. I make fruit leathers occasionally which are AWESOME. Basically just pureed fruit assortment spread flat on a teflon sheet and popped in the dehydrator. Other than that just a homemade powerbar which is a date and walnut based blend with an assortment of seeds, some blueberry, cinnamon, vanilla, honey, and usually a little spirulina powder. I would like to use it more but am too lazy to search out recipes let alone actually try to make them.

I think you pretty well hit it right on the head there. All the body really needs is a variety. A good mix of veggies, lots of leafy greens, as much fresh fruit as can be acquired, and I also highly believe in eating a good grouping of pseudo grains such as hemp, flax, quinoa, chia, amaranth, kamut, etc. The typical raw food diet plan relies way too heavily on dates and nuts.

What book do you recommend? I like reading and especially love it when there is knowledge to be gained. The only raw foods books I've read are Kevin Gianni's High Raw and Yuri Elkaim's Eating for Energy. Both of which I highly recommend. High Raw provides you with all the basics and some great information and Eating for Energy gives you an absolute information overload with a 12 Week meal plan and dozens of awesome recipes.

You can pic up High Raw for free here: http://renegadehealth.com/blog/ and check out Eating for Energy here: http://www.eatingforenergy.ca/go.php?offer=organicnut&pid=1&u=ultimateenergydiet.com/start .

H4V, have you read Dr. Gram's book the
80/10/10 diet? Pretty much raw fruit and greens. I have not been able to give up my kefir smoothies and go his way yet. I want to because it would be interesting to see how I felt on such a pure diet.

I feed my dogs a diet of raw meats consisting of a certain percentage of muscle tissue, ground bone and organ meat. The meat is all organic with no hormones or antibiotics. The dogs eat better than I do.

I admire the vegetarians and vegans out there. Power to ya. I would love to get on an all raw diet but I don't think I have the knowledge or willpower to do so.

On a side note I seen an interview with a 104 year old man who looked healthy as shit and didn't seem lame at all. His secret was eating only raw foods his whole life. :D
