Questions about Clones and Mothers

Hi Guys and Gals,
I wanted to pick your brains about clone quality.

My dilemma is that my mother plants have turned into Goliath plants That are growing faster than I can
use the cuttings for clones.
What are the drawbacks of using a clone as a new mother and sending my current mothers into the flower room?
Will this eventually cause poor quality? Or will they stay the same exact strain quality?

What i wanted to do was replace the mothers with smaller easier to manage plants.
I had trouble earlier this year with mites and a bush was very hard to clean them out of, whereas the smalller
plants were easier to control the mite problem.
Any help from those of you who have expertise in this area is appreciated.
I imagine there is a sticky about this somewhere, but I am a very slow reader and not really good with the forum browsing.
Thanks
Peace:weed:

I see nothing wrong with what you want to do -- that is, send the mothers to flower and start new mothers using some fine specimens. I occasionally use a plant as a mother, but not usually. I typically take clones out of veg just before switching. I am not sure I buy into the notion of quality degeneration over time, people far more expert than I can answer that. I haven't had any issues. I don't run most strains forever anyway.

This is one that'll be debated, but I think you'll be ok. I've cloned clones of clones that had been cloned who knows how many times before. The clones seemed just as good as their mothers..

working on the forth generation of my original Barbara Bush mother, found no difference in any of the four clonings, quality and aroma seemed to be the same

Thanks for the info guys, it is much appreciated. It's a long learning curve learning all the ins and outs and having other experienced growers to give guidance is priceless.
thanks again.

Genetic drift when taking a cutting is possible. I've observed clones develop veining on the stem that they mother did not have that were passed onto successive clone generations. A less drift that i have observed involves clones never developing more leaf blades than were on the branch that was clone - meaning if you clone a small branch that only has three bladed leaves, the clone sometimes never develops leaves that have 5 or more blades no matter how large it gets.

And sometimes, you just have a bad small clone, that didn't root properly...
How close to a doctor's office is your clone operating room?
The cleaner your environment for cloning, the better you will be...
Clones [for me] grow slightly slower than a seedling, but obviously get mature faster...
I say do it!
Good Luck!

you can get many more cuttings from more small mothers than fewer larger ones
larger plants grow horrible stringy growth at the bottom anyway and do not provide good cuttings
so much of their size is wasted

start new mothers from your clones and keep them 1 to 1.5 ft high
if you have never done it this way before you will be surprised how many cuttings you can get from 3-4 small mother plants
when you keep cutting them back to keep them short they grow like a firmed plant with shoots everywhere, and the shoots are nice and thick too
each small mother can easy give 10-15 good cuttings every 2-3 weeks

trim up the mothers remove the weak growth and flower them, they will yield well

peace
