question about growing canteloupe?

okay so i just planted some canteloupe seeds in a pot on my porch, cause i wanted to add a little something to my garden of green beans, tomatoes, zuchinis, and cucumber plants. it will get plenty of sun and everything. according to the packet, the stuff grows pretty quick. the only thing i'm worried about is whether or not these guys will make it. the packet said "early spring to mid summer". it's august 3rd, which i know isn't exactly "mid-summer", but i figured i'd be able to grow SOMETHING since its only august, and its takes only 84 days to go from seed to melon. i live in some suburb in massachusettes, and so far here i've had ideal growing conditions weather wise for quite some time.

so tell me guys, am i just being over paranoid, or are my cantaloupe seeds not gonna produce fruit?

It *MIGHT* force into flowering, and stay smallish... rather than the 20-30 ft long that a full serving of vegetative growth would have done. Sounds kinda familiar eh??

To force melons to ripen... turn off the water. Say for example, if your a week away from the anticipated first frost and they still aren't fully ripe.

IF it doesnt turn out... there is no such thing as a wasted plant. Your Compost Pile cant tell the difference. The more bio-mass the better.
