Putting HPS lights in an AeroGarden?

Ok, I was planning to if I could put them in an AeroGarden. Didn't know if the AG had some type of special lighting set up that restricted the use of certain lights.

Can you go out of town for about 4 days while growing hydroponically or would the nutrients and p.h go way off scale and ruin your plants? I heard you can not leave your plants at any time to go out of town while growing hydro because of the constant attention that the system requires. Is this true?

Are there ANY cheap HPS hoods? Everyone I find is over $100......

Also, do I need a ballast? What does the ballast do?

I use an 18 gal. Rubbermaid container for my res. I fill it to about 15 gal.

If I need to go out of town for a few days I will drain some of the water out and replace it with plain water.

This will lower the nutrient level. Then as the plants use water you won't have to worry about out PPM levels getting too high while you are gone.

Another option is to use a garden hose attached to a float valve. Put the valve in the res and you are safe for a very long time.

Don't worry about your PH. It won't change much.

Run your pumps on a computer UPS if you have power issues where you live. That way if you loose power your plants will not die.

Check the internet machine... there are deals out there....

You will need a ballast, of the right wattage and type...

400watt HPS bulb with 400 watt HPS ballast

100 MH bulb with 100 watt MH ballast...

No way to get around it...

The ballast regulates the power required by the bulb... no way to escape the ballast...

Check my garden... it may give you some ideas... but read from the start... as you should every journal... it keeps people from answering the same question 20 times...

Good Luck...

Oh, even though I have one (more reason for anyone to listen) I would recommend you skip it...

Go with Stinkbuds Idea... cheaper, better, and well, BETTER...
